Choosing a full-service marketing agency on evidence
The phrase describes an operating model rather than a level of quality. A firm that offers strategy, brand, web, search, paid media, content, social and analytics under one contract is selling coordination: one plan, one team, one invoice, and nobody arguing over whose channel produced the result. That is genuinely valuable to a company without an internal marketing lead. It is also the easiest place in the market to overpay for breadth you do not use, because a bundled retainer hides which parts are strong and which are just present. This page shows what these firms publish about price, minimum engagement and clients, and gives you a sequence for testing whether the breadth is real.

How to shortlist a full-service marketing agency
- Name the two or three functions that will actually carry the plan. Almost every bundled retainer is really funding two or three channels, with the rest present but token. Decide which ones matter for the next year and say so. Then judge each candidate on those specifically, because an agency can be excellent at paid media and merely adequate at everything else and still be the right choice.
- Test the depth of each function separately. For each named function, ask who does the work, how many people do it, and for one piece of evidence in that discipline alone: a search audit, a campaign structure, a content sample. Breadth is easy to claim on a services page and hard to fake when you ask a specialist question about one line of it.
- Get the minimum engagement and the fee structure in writing. Ask for the smallest retainer accepted, the contract term, and whether media is billed at cost or with a markup. Bundled retainers are the hardest thing in this market to compare, so insist on a breakdown by function and hours. Where a starting price is published, treat it as a floor for the narrowest scope.
- Agree the measurement frame before anything starts. One agreed definition of a qualified enquiry, one set of tracked metrics, one reporting cadence, and analytics accounts in your name with the agency added as a user. The advantage of a single provider is a single coherent measurement view, and that advantage evaporates if each channel reports on the metric that flatters it.
What these firms publish, and what the silence means
Our index records what each agency states on its own website, with the date checked, rather than what a badge or an award implies. Full service firms publish starting prices less often than single channel specialists, because their engagements vary more and because a bundled number invites comparison they would rather have on a call. Where a figure is published it is almost always a floor for the narrowest possible scope.
Where nothing is published we record unknown rather than estimating. That leaves gaps in the table, and the gaps are honest: a made up number would let you compare two agencies on a figure one of them never stated, which is worse than knowing you have to ask.
The real trade against specialists, and how to test it
A specialist is usually deeper in its discipline and a full service firm is usually better at coordination. Which one wins depends on your internal capacity. If nobody inside your company can brief three vendors, resolve conflicts between them and assemble one report, the coordination is worth real money and a bundle is the right buy. If you have a competent marketing lead, best of breed specialists managed internally frequently outperform a bundle at similar total cost.
There is a middle path that works well: buy the strategy and the one or two functions that carry the plan from a strong generalist, and buy the technically hard channel from a specialist. Say so in the pitch. An agency that refuses to work alongside a specialist is protecting revenue rather than your outcome, and that reaction is itself useful information.
How to judge quality when the pitch covers everything
Ask for a paid discovery or audit before committing to a year. It is a small fraction of a retainer, it produces something you keep, and it shows you how the firm thinks rather than how it sells. Google's own guidance on hiring a search provider recommends exactly this shape for the search component, an audit first with read access rather than write access, and the principle generalises to every other function in a bundle.
Then check the unglamorous things: who specifically will run the account day to day rather than who is presenting, how many other accounts that person carries, what happens when they leave, and how a disagreement about direction gets resolved. Bundled retainers fail on staffing and communication far more often than on capability.
Questions people actually ask
- Is a bundled retainer cheaper than several specialists?
- Rarely cheaper on paper, sometimes cheaper in total. A single agency reduces your management overhead, removes the finger pointing between vendors and produces one coherent measurement view, and those savings are real even though they never appear on an invoice. Compare total cost including your own time, not just the fees.
- What size company does this model suit?
- It suits companies with real marketing budget but no senior in house marketer, and companies whose channels genuinely interlock. Very small businesses usually get more from one focused channel done properly, and large companies with an internal team usually get more from specialists they direct themselves.
- How do I stop paying for services I never use?
- Ask for the retainer broken down by function and hours, review actual hours delivered each quarter, and reallocate rather than accepting a fixed split. A good agency will move hours toward what is working. An agency that cannot tell you where the hours went is not running a service business you can audit.
- What contract length is reasonable?
- Three to six months initially with a monthly rolling continuation, extended once you have seen the work. Strategy and brand work need continuity to pay off, so short hopping is genuinely wasteful, but a twelve month commitment signed before either side has proved anything transfers all the risk to you.
