How to Find the Best Link Building Agencies

Link building is the part of search where the gap between the best providers and the worst is widest, and where the worst are actively harmful rather than merely ineffective. A firm that earns coverage from publications your customers read is doing a genuinely difficult job. A firm that meets a monthly quota by buying placements is transferring risk onto your domain and charging you for it. This page sets out how to compare providers on evidence they have already published, what a defensible programme actually costs, and the specific questions that separate the two kinds of firm before you have spent anything.

How to compare link building agencies

  1. Ask for last quarter's placements as live URLs. Not a case study, not a logo wall: the actual links won in the last three months, as URLs you can open. Then read those pages. A publication with real editorial staff, real readers and content unrelated to link selling is worth paying for. A site whose archive is entirely guest posts is not.
  2. Get their position on paid links in writing. Google's spam policies treat links bought to pass ranking signals as a violation, and the risk sits with your domain. Ask the agency to state whether it buys placements and, if so, how they are marked. An honest yes with disclosure is more useful than a vague reassurance about white hat methods.
  3. Check whether they create anything or only ask. The firms that earn strong links usually make something worth referencing first: original data, a genuinely useful tool, a story a journalist can run. Ask what asset they would build for you in the first quarter. If the whole plan is outreach with nothing behind it, response rates will decide your results.
  4. Look for published pricing or a disclosed floor. A provider that names a minimum can be compared with others; quote-only pricing tends to be set by what you look like you can pay. Ask whether pricing is per link or per month, since per-link pricing largely reveals how the links are being obtained.
  5. Ask what they do about a manual action. A firm that has handled a link-related manual action has a documented process for auditing, disavowing and filing reconsideration. A firm that has never seen one may not understand what it is exposing you to. The answer tells you how they think about risk on your behalf.

What separates a defensible programme from a quota

The cheap version of link building is a fixed number of links per month at a fixed price, sourced from a network of sites that exist to sell them. It is easy to price, easy to report and easy to sell, and it is the pattern Google's spam policies describe when they address link schemes, large-scale article campaigns and keyword-rich anchor text. The consequence, if it lands, falls on your site rather than the vendor's.

The defensible version is slower and produces fewer links. It looks like digital PR: building or finding something worth citing, pitching it to publications with actual audiences, and taking whatever coverage results. It also includes the unglamorous work of reclaiming unlinked brand mentions and formalising relationships you already have with suppliers, trade bodies and sponsorship partners. Judge the output by whether a customer might plausibly read the publication, not by a count or a third-party authority score.

What it costs and how it is priced

Above the link-selling end of the market, programmes are priced as a monthly retainer or per campaign rather than per link. The drivers are the seniority of the people doing outreach, whether asset or research creation is included, how contested your sector is, and the publication tier being targeted, since national coverage takes far more work than a niche trade blog.

Expect a real programme to cost more per link than a quota service and to deliver fewer of them. That is the trade. When comparing quotes, put the deliverables side by side rather than the monthly figures: one provider's retainer may include original research and a designer, while another's covers outreach hours alone. Ask for the split between one-off asset creation and recurring outreach so you can see which half of the fee is buying what.

Where link building fits in the wider plan

Links amplify pages rather than replacing them. Pointing authority at a page that does not answer its query buys visibility for something the reader will leave, so most buyers get better returns by fixing the technical and on-page foundation first and funding authority work once the target pages are genuinely competitive answers.

That sequencing also protects the budget. Link building is typically the most expensive line in a search programme, and it is the one whose results are slowest to appear. Starting it before the pages are worth ranking spends the most expensive money on the least ready assets, which is how link retainers end up cancelled at month six with nothing attributable to show.

Questions people actually ask

How many links should a good agency deliver each month?
A count is the wrong measure, because any provider willing to buy can hit any quota. Quality-led programmes routinely produce a handful of placements a month rather than dozens. Ask to see last quarter's live URLs and judge whether those publications have real readers.
Is buying links ever acceptable?
Buying links that pass ranking signals violates Google's spam policies, and the receiving site carries the exposure. Paid placements are acceptable when they are marked so they do not pass ranking signals, which is precisely what most sellers will not agree to do.
Do domain authority scores tell me anything?
They are tool vendors' estimates, not signals Google publishes. They work as a rough filter and fail as a target, because optimising for them attracts the sites that game them. Relevance to your market and genuine readership are the better tests.
How long before links move rankings?
Slowly, and rarely in isolation. Expect a couple of quarters before a link programme's effect is legible in rankings, longer in contested sectors. Anyone promising measurable movement within weeks is either buying links or describing a change that would have happened anyway.
