Healthcare website design company, chosen on evidence

A healthcare website is a regulated build wearing the clothes of an ordinary marketing project. It collects information that can become protected health information, it has to be usable by people with disabilities and by people in distress, and its analytics and advertising configuration is a compliance decision rather than a tag manager task. Most web design firms are fluent in the design half and silent on the rest. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves: sector specialisation, pricing when they print it, and proof that can be checked from their own pages.

How to choose a healthcare web design firm

  1. Ask about the tracking configuration first. HHS guidance says regulated entities may not use tracking technologies in a way that results in impermissible disclosures of protected health information to vendors. A firm that treats pixels as a launch-day afterthought has not built for a covered entity before.
  2. Establish whether they will sign a business associate agreement. HHS states that a tracking technology vendor is a business associate if it meets the definition, regardless of whether the required agreement is in place. Ask whether the firm has signed one, and scope exactly what data it will be able to see.
  3. Separate the build from the ongoing care. Design, build and migration are finite. Hosting, security patching, accessibility maintenance and content updates are continuous. A single blended figure hides the moment the project ends and the subscription begins.
  4. Test the appointment path on a phone. Most patients arrive on mobile, often in a hurry. Ask to walk the booking and contact flow on a real device on an existing client site before you sign, not from a desktop mockup in a pitch deck.
  5. Verify the firm from its own pages. Published address, named team, printed prices and case detail naming the sector and the site. Agencies appear in this index only on what can be verified from their own published pages; hold every finalist to the same standard.

What makes a healthcare build different

The privacy layer changes the specification. HHS guidance on online tracking technologies says that individually identifiable health information collected on a regulated entity's website or app generally is protected health information, even where no existing relationship exists, and it distinguishes authenticated pages behind a login, which clearly involve such information, from unauthenticated pages, which depend on context. A job listings page is not a disclosure; a form where someone enters an email to book an appointment can be. That distinction has to be designed in, not patched later.

Accessibility is the second difference. A healthcare audience includes more people using screen readers, magnification and keyboard navigation than almost any other, and an inaccessible booking flow is a clinical access problem rather than a design preference. Ask which standard the firm builds to and how it tests, with real assistive technology rather than an automated scan alone.

The third is content governance. Clinical pages need named, credentialed authorship and a review cycle. Ask how the build supports that: author profiles, review dates, and a workflow a practice can actually maintain after handover.

Reading a healthcare web design quote

Ask what happens to the existing site's URLs. A redesign that drops or reshuffles addresses without a redirect map discards search visibility that took years to build, and the cost of that shows up months after the invoice is paid. Any quote should name migration and redirects as line items.

Ask who owns what after launch: the domain, the hosting account, the content management licence, the design files and the analytics property. Ownership in your name makes a future change of supplier a permissions change rather than a rebuild.

Then ask what the first year after launch costs in total, including hosting, updates, security and support. Published prices from the agencies in this index that print them are the honest reference points for that comparison, and a finalist should be willing to position its quote against them.

Questions people actually ask

Can we run Google Analytics or an advertising pixel on a medical website?
It depends on the page and the data. HHS guidance says regulated entities may not use tracking technologies in a way that results in impermissible disclosures of protected health information to vendors, and treats authenticated pages as clearly involving such information. Involve your privacy officer before configuration, not after launch.
Does a web design firm need a business associate agreement?
If it will receive protected health information, yes. HHS states that a tracking technology vendor is a business associate if it meets the definition, whether or not the agreement is in place. Ask whether the firm has signed one before and scope what it will be able to access.
What does a healthcare website cost?
The agencies here that print prices set the honest reference points, from template-based practice sites to multi-location custom builds. Ask each finalist to separate the one-time build from the first year of hosting, updates and support so the totals are comparable.
Will a redesign hurt our search visibility?
It can if URLs change without a redirect map. Require migration and redirects as named line items in the quote, keep the analytics and Search Console properties in your own name, and agree how visibility will be monitored for the first months after launch.
