SEO for a cleaning company, bought on evidence
Cleaning is one of the purest local search categories there is: almost every customer starts with a search, almost nobody researches for weeks, and the business that appears first with visible reviews and an easy way to book usually wins the job. That makes search visibility close to the whole marketing problem for a residential or commercial cleaning company, and it makes the choice of provider consequential. This index lists agencies on what they publish about themselves, pricing where they print it, home and commercial services experience, and named client proof that can be checked from their own pages before you spend an hour on calls.

How to buy search work for a cleaning business
- Fix the Business Profile before anything else. For a cleaning company the profile often outranks the website for the searches that matter. Categories, service area, hours, attributes, photos and review responses should be complete and accurate before a single blog post is commissioned, because that is where the enquiries actually come from.
- Separate residential from commercial. Residential cleaning and commercial or janitorial contracts are different searches, different buyers and different sales cycles. Ask the agency to show which side of that split their proposed pages and keywords address, because one strategy will not serve both well.
- Build the service area honestly. Google's guidelines require the address or service area to be accurate and precise, with one profile per business. Cover new suburbs by adding genuine service areas and genuinely different local pages, not by duplicating listings or stuffing city names into the business name.
- Make booking the easiest thing on the page. Most cleaning enquiries are decided in under a minute. A visible phone number, an instant quote or booking option and clear pricing signals convert more of the traffic you already have, which is usually cheaper than buying more of it.
What decides who ranks in a cleaning search
Google publishes the factors for local results and they are worth reading before any agency explains them to you. Results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well the profile matches the search, improved by complete and detailed business information. Distance is how far the business is from the searcher. Prominence is how well known the business is, influenced by information including how many websites link to the business and how many reviews it has, with more reviews and positive ratings helping.
Google also states on the same page that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. That single sentence disqualifies a large share of the packages sold to cleaning companies, which are built around a promised position in the map results. Reviews, on the other hand, are inside your control, and for a category where trust and access to the home are the buying concern, they carry more weight than almost anything else an agency can do for you.
What a fair engagement looks like
Expect the first phase to be profile accuracy, review generation and fixing the site so it loads fast and explains services clearly, with pages for each service and each genuine area served. Expect the second phase to be content that answers real customer questions, such as what a deep clean includes, how move-out cleans are priced and what insurance a cleaner should carry. Expect the third to be local links and citations from chambers, suppliers and local press.
What you should not accept is a package built on a fixed monthly number of blog posts with no profile work, no review process and no explanation of where links come from. Ask for two cleaning or home services clients you can call, ask who writes, and put ownership of the site, the content and the analytics accounts in your name in the contract.
Questions people actually ask
- How much should a cleaning company spend on SEO?
- Less than most agencies will propose, at least at the start. Profile accuracy, review generation and a fast site that explains services clearly do most of the work in this category. Published prices in this index are entry floors from agencies' own pages with the date each was checked.
- How do I rank in the towns I serve but do not have an office in?
- Set an accurate service area on your profile and build genuinely different pages for the areas you actually serve. Google says distance from the searcher is a main local ranking factor, so there is a natural limit; duplicate listings and city names in the business name risk suspension rather than fixing it.
- Do reviews really matter that much?
- Google says prominence is influenced by factors including how many reviews a business has, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. For a service that enters customers' homes, they also carry the trust that converts the click. Never buy or incentivise them.
- Is it worth running ads while search work builds?
- Often yes, because search work takes months while a cleaning business needs bookings now. Treat them as separate budgets with separate measurement, and make sure both point at a page that makes booking effortless before you increase either one.
