Enterprise SEO consultant, hired on evidence

An enterprise SEO consultant is hired when a large site's search problem is a decision problem rather than a capacity problem. The organisation usually already has writers, developers and an analytics team; what it lacks is someone who can look at a site of hundreds of thousands of URLs, work out which few changes actually matter, and make the case for them to people who control a release schedule. This page sets out what the role covers, the specific technical territory that only appears at scale, and how to test a candidate before you hire.

Consultant, agency or hire

The three options solve different problems. An agency supplies capacity: people to produce content, run audits and work a backlog. An in-house hire supplies continuity: someone who owns prioritisation, builds relationships with engineering and product, and is still there next year. A consultant supplies judgement and leverage: a senior outside view that can tell a large organisation which of its fifty candidate projects are worth the political capital, and that can say so to an executive audience without a stake in the internal argument. The common failure is hiring one to do another's job, most often bringing in a consultant because no one internally will own the programme. A consultant can define the programme; someone inside has to run it. If nobody has that job, the recommendations become a document and the document becomes an artefact nobody reads.

The technical territory that only exists at scale

Crawl economics is the clearest example. Google says crawl budget is a real consideration for large sites with more than a million unique pages whose content changes moderately often, for medium or larger sites with more than ten thousand unique pages whose content changes very rapidly, and for sites where a large share of URLs are classified in Search Console as discovered but currently not indexed, while noting those numbers are a rough estimate for classification rather than a threshold. The mechanism has two halves. The crawl capacity limit protects your servers by limiting the total time Google spends holding connections open, rising when the site responds reliably and falling when it slows or returns server errors. Crawl demand depends on the site's size, update frequency, page quality and relevance compared with other sites, and is heavily affected by perceived inventory, because duplicate URLs waste crawling that useful pages needed. The remedies Google names are unglamorous and effective: consolidate duplicates, block unnecessary URLs in robots.txt, return 404 or 410 for permanently removed pages, keep sitemaps current with lastmod, improve page load speed and support caching so unchanged pages can return a 304. A consultant who cannot discuss these in your site's terms is not an enterprise consultant.

Evidence and measurement at enterprise scale

Search Console is the shared source of truth for this work. Google describes it as a free service that helps you monitor, maintain and troubleshoot your site's presence in Google Search, and notes that you do not have to sign up to appear in results, but that it helps you understand and improve how Google sees your site. It confirms crawling, surfaces indexing problems, reports impressions, clicks and queries, raises alerts and shows links. At enterprise scale the practical questions are governance ones: who has access, whether property coverage matches the real site structure, and whether the data is exported and retained beyond the interface's window so year-on-year analysis is even possible. A consultant's first week is usually spent discovering that these are not in order. Grant read-only access during an evaluation, not write access.

How to test a candidate before hiring

Google's guidance for hiring search help applies to consultants as much as agencies. Ask for examples of previous work and success stories, what results they expect and in what timeframe, their experience in your industry and geography, and how communication will work. Apply the warning signs: unsolicited pitches, claimed special relationships with Google, secrecy about method, talk of link popularity schemes or submitting a site to thousands of search engines, and above all ranking guarantees, since Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking. Add two enterprise-specific tests. Give the candidate a real, messy internal constraint, such as a template owned by another team that will not be changed this quarter, and listen to whether the answer is a workaround or a complaint. And ask them to name something they would not do, because a consultant with no opinions about what to skip will hand you a list of everything and leave you to prioritise it yourself.

Questions people ask about enterprise seo consultant

When does a site need an enterprise SEO consultant?

When the number of possible projects exceeds the organisation's ability to choose between them, or when a technical problem spans teams that do not report to each other. If the problem is simply producing more work, capacity from an agency or an in-house hire is cheaper.

Does my site really have a crawl budget problem?

Probably not unless it is large or fast-changing. Google flags sites above roughly a million unique pages with moderately changing content, sites above roughly ten thousand pages changing very rapidly, and sites with a large share of URLs reported as discovered but currently not indexed, while calling those numbers a rough estimate.

What access should a consultant get?

Read-only Search Console and analytics access during an evaluation, upgraded only once an engagement is signed. Google's hiring guidance makes the same point about audits generally.

Can a consultant promise a ranking improvement?

No one can guarantee a number one ranking, and Google names ranking guarantees as a warning sign. A credible consultant commits to a diagnosis, a prioritised plan and an argued expected range, not to positions.

Do we need Search Console to rank?

No. Google states you do not have to sign up for Search Console to be included in Search results, but it helps you understand and improve how Google sees your site, which at enterprise scale is not optional in practice.
