SEO technical audit service, scoped before it is bought
An SEO technical audit service answers one question: what stops search engines from crawling, indexing and understanding this site the way its visitors see it. Bought well, it is a fixed-scope diagnostic with a prioritised fix list a developer can execute. Bought badly, it is an automated crawl report reformatted into a PDF and priced as consultancy. This index lists agencies on what they publish about themselves, and this page sets out how to tell the two apart before paying for either.

How to buy a technical audit
- Fix the scope in writing first. A real audit names its territory: crawl and index coverage, rendering, duplication and canonicalisation, structured data, page experience measurements, and internal linking. Google's starter guide frames the underlying test plainly: Google needs to access the same resources as the user's browser. An audit that cannot list its checks in advance is a report generator.
- Grant read access, and only read access. The audit needs Search Console and analytics data to separate real problems from theoretical ones. Google's own advice to site owners hiring an SEO is to grant read-only access to Search Console at the audit stage and to be suspicious of anyone who needs more before an engagement exists.
- Demand prioritisation, not volume. Two hundred findings ranked by tool severity are worth less than fifteen ranked by expected impact on the pages that earn money. Ask how the provider decides what matters, and expect page experience findings to be framed honestly: Google says Core Web Vitals are used in ranking but do not guarantee positions.
- Verify the provider against its own pages. Published address, named team, printed audit pricing and case detail that names the client and the fix. Agencies are listed in this index only on what can be verified from their own pages; an audit vendor, whose entire product is scrutiny, should welcome the same scrutiny applied to itself.
What separates an audit from a crawl export
Any crawler can list missing titles and broken links in minutes. The paid-for judgment is in three places the tools cannot reach. First, reconciliation: comparing what the crawler sees with what Search Console reports actually indexed, because the gap between the two is where revenue leaks. Second, causation: tracing a symptom like falling index coverage to its mechanism, template by template. Third, sequencing: stating which fixes are worth engineering time this quarter and which are cosmetic, and being willing to say that some flagged issues do not matter for this site.
The deliverable test is equally concrete: every finding should carry the evidence it rests on, the page types it affects, the fix, and who implements it. If the report could have been produced without looking at your search data, it probably was.
What a technical audit will not do
An audit removes obstacles; it does not create demand. Google's documentation is consistent on both halves: crawlability and page experience help systems find and reward content, changes can take hours or months to show effects, and no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. So a technical audit service sold with ranking guarantees is misdescribing its own product. The honest framing, and the one to buy, is that the audit tells you what is broken, what it costs you, and in what order to fix it; the ranking outcome then depends on content and competition, which the audit only maps.
Questions people actually ask
- What does an SEO technical audit cost?
- Pricing scales with site size and complexity, from small fixed-fee site reviews to multi-week engagements on large platforms. Few agencies print audit prices; where this index has them, use the printed figures as reference points and compare like-for-like scope, not headline price.
- What access does a technical audit provider need?
- Read access to Search Console and analytics, and a crawl of the site. Google's guidance for site owners says grant read-only Search Console access at the audit stage; write access, code access and deploy rights come later, if ever, under a proper engagement.
- How often is a technical audit worth repeating?
- After any migration, redesign or platform change, and otherwise when monitoring shows drift: falling index coverage, slowing pages, template changes shipped without SEO review. A standing quarterly audit of an unchanged site mostly re-sells the previous report.
- Will fixing technical issues raise my rankings?
- Sometimes, and no honest vendor promises it. Google says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems but good scores do not guarantee top results, and relevance comes first. Fixing crawl and index problems recovers pages that were invisible; beyond that, content decides.
