Choosing the best local search engine optimization company
Every provider claims to be the best local search company, and none of them can prove it in a way that transfers to your business, because local results depend on proximity, category and competition in your specific town. What can be compared is evidence: what a firm publishes about its pricing, what minimum it will state in writing, which clients it names, and whether those clients still look well served. Our index records exactly that, read from each agency's own website and dated. This page sets out how to use it, and the sequence that turns a list of plausible names into a shortlist you can defend to whoever signs the invoice.

How to shortlist a local search company
- Define your service area honestly. Write down the towns and postcodes you can actually serve profitably, and the ones you list because they sound impressive. Local ranking is heavily influenced by the distance between the searcher and your verified address, so a service area far from your premises is a content problem rather than a listings problem, and it needs to be priced as one.
- Ask for the minimum engagement in writing. The smallest retainer and the shortest term, by email, from every candidate. It removes more names from a long list than any other question and takes one message to send. Where a starting price is published, read it as a floor describing the narrowest possible scope rather than an estimate of what you will pay.
- Check who does the work and what is subcontracted. Listing management, content writing, review acquisition and web development are commonly bought in. That is normal and not disqualifying, but it changes turnaround and accountability. Ask which parts leave the building, who you will speak to when something breaks, and whether the person in the pitch will be on your account.
- Fix ownership and the lead definition before signing. Create the analytics property, the Search Console account and the business listing yourself, then grant the agency access. Agree in writing that a countable lead is a genuine enquiry, not any form submission or tracked call. These two clauses decide whether a change of agency later costs a transition or a restart.
What local search work actually consists of
The durable part is unglamorous. An accurate, complete business listing with the right primary category, consistent details wherever the business is mentioned, a steady honest flow of reviews with replies, and pages on your own site for each service and each genuine location. Google documents the structured data properties it supports for a local business, including opening hours and departments, and getting those right lets search engines read the same facts from your pages that they read from your listing.
The part that gets oversold is volume: monthly blog posts nobody reads, citation building at scale long after the useful directories are covered, and social posting with no booking path. Ask a candidate what they would stop doing on your current spend. A firm with a real practice will name something within a minute, because there is almost always something worth cutting.
How to read a claim of being the best
Rankings screenshots prove very little, because local results differ by the searcher's position and a screenshot taken from the agency's own office is not your customer's view. Awards and badges are frequently paid placements. What does carry weight is a named client at a comparable scale whose site you can inspect and whose staff will take your call, plus a published price you can hold them to.
Be equally sceptical of guarantees. No outside provider can allocate a ranking, since the results are not theirs to give, and Google's own guidance on hiring search help makes exactly that point. A guarantee in a proposal is not a sign of confidence; it is a sign that the person selling is comfortable promising something they do not control, which tells you what else they will promise.
Comparing the shortlist and deciding
Once you have three candidates with written minimums, named clients and a scope you defined, price the same scope with each. Ask specifically how many location pages, how many service pages and how many hours the figure covers, because two quotes at the same number routinely contain very different amounts of senior time. Ask what ships in month one.
Then review at ninety days against the lead definition you agreed rather than against a dashboard. Reconcile the reported leads to real enquiries the office remembers taking. The gap between those two numbers is the single most informative measurement in the relationship, and it is the one no agency report will show you unless you ask for it.
Questions people actually ask
- Does the agency need to be local to me?
- Not necessarily. Local search work is a discipline rather than a geography, and much of it, listings, reviews, structured data and service pages, is done remotely. Local knowledge helps where competition varies neighbourhood by neighbourhood and where face to face meetings speed up the early work. Weigh it, but do not let it shrink your shortlist to whoever happens to be nearby.
- How many locations can one retainer cover?
- Ask, and get the number in the contract. Multi-location work scales badly because each location needs a genuine page, its own listing management and its own review flow, and a retainer priced for one location quietly stretches across five. Agree a per-location figure for growth so adding a branch is a known cost rather than a renegotiation.
- Are paid citation services worth it?
- The first pass is, and it is quickly done: get the major data aggregators and the handful of directories that matter for your category accurate and consistent. Beyond that, buying hundreds of low quality listings adds maintenance rather than visibility. If a proposal is largely citation volume, ask what the next ten citations are and judge whether a customer would ever see them.
- What should we expect in the first ninety days?
- Listing and technical corrections shipped, the service and location pages written or scheduled, review collection running, and measurement in place with an agreed lead definition. Ranking movement on competitive terms usually takes longer. Judge the quarter on whether the agreed work happened and whether enquiry quality improved, not on a position report from a single screenshot.
