Organic Search Engine Optimization SEO Company: How to Compare

Choosing an organic search engine optimization SEO company means buying a service whose results arrive slowly, whose deliverables are largely invisible, and whose reporting is unusually easy to flatter. That combination is why so many engagements run for a year before the buyer realises nothing was ever aimed at anything. This page explains what organic search work actually contains, how it differs from paid search, which inputs move the monthly fee, and a short method for comparing companies on evidence they have already published rather than on the confidence of a pitch.

How to compare organic SEO companies

  1. Record a baseline before you brief anyone. Note your current organic enquiries per month and your positions for the five terms you most want, dated. Almost no buyer does this, and without it every future report is unfalsifiable. The baseline is what turns quarter three into a real conversation rather than an exchange of opinions.
  2. Demand a named target list. Ask each candidate which specific queries it will chase and why those, including estimated volume and how competitive they are. Reporting should then be against that list. A company that will not commit to a target list before the contract will report on whatever happens to move afterwards.
  3. Ask for the first ninety days in detail. A serious company can tell you what the first quarter contains: which technical faults get fixed, which pages get written, what gets measured. If the answer is a strategy phase followed by ongoing optimisation, you are being asked to fund a plan that has not been made yet.
  4. Verify two clients from your own device. Ask for two clients in a comparable market you may contact, then search their target terms yourself. Slides can be filtered by location, device or date. What you can reproduce on your own phone is the only ranking evidence that survives scrutiny, and the client call tells you the rest.

What organic SEO work actually contains

Three layers, in order of how quickly they pay. Technical health comes first: pages that load quickly, work on a phone, and can be crawled and indexed. Where indexation is the constraint, fixing it can move results within weeks, and Google documents both the crawling fundamentals and the performance signals it measures. Second is content, meaning pages built for the queries you agreed, written for the person deciding rather than assembled from a keyword list. Third is authority, meaning genuine coverage and links earned because something is worth citing, which is slow and is where most of the shortcuts and most of the risk live.

Everything else is a variation on those three. Be wary of proposals that are entirely layer three, because bought links are the fastest way to acquire a problem, and equally wary of proposals that are entirely layer two, because publishing into a site that cannot be crawled properly is money spent on pages nobody will see. A competent company sequences the three rather than selling one of them as the whole discipline.

What moves the monthly fee

Competitive pressure in your category is the largest input, because it sets how much content and authority work is required to move at all. Site size and technical debt is the second: a large legacy site with template problems consumes months before a single new page is written. The third is the amount of original writing included, and the fourth is whether outreach or digital PR forms part of the scope, which is the most expensive line in most proposals.

Ask for deliverable counts rather than adjectives, and put them in the contract: pages written per month, technical tickets raised and closed, outreach placements attempted, and who attends the review. Two proposals with counts can be compared. Two proposals promising ongoing optimisation cannot be, and the vagueness is rarely accidental.

Organic against paid, honestly

Paid search buys immediate presence and stops the moment the budget does. Organic accrues slowly and keeps working, but it cannot be switched on for a quarter when you need enquiries now. The two also inform each other: paid data tells you which queries actually convert, which is the cheapest way to aim organic work, and organic rankings reduce how much you must bid over time.

The practical answer for most businesses is both, with the split set by urgency. If you need pipeline this quarter, weight paid and let organic mature underneath. If you already rank somewhere and want to lower the cost of demand, weight organic. What does not work is treating organic as a cheaper substitute for ads on a three month horizon, which is the mismatch behind most disappointed engagements.

Questions people actually ask

How long before organic SEO shows results?
Technical fixes can show within weeks when indexation was the problem. Content and authority work generally takes two to three quarters in a competitive category. Judge quarter one on delivery, quarter two on rankings and impressions for the agreed target list, and quarter three on tracked enquiries against your baseline.
Are guaranteed rankings ever legitimate?
No. No company controls search results, and a guarantee is either meaningless, attached to terms nobody searches, or backed by tactics that create risk. A confident company will instead commit to deliverables and a target list, which is a promise it can actually keep and you can actually check.
What should a monthly report contain?
Tracked enquiries first, then rankings for the agreed list, then impressions and traffic, then what was shipped that month. If the report leads with total traffic or keyword counts, ask for it to be rebuilt. Reports drift towards whatever looks good unless the metric list is fixed in writing at the start.
Should we buy links?
No. Paying for links that pass ranking signals conflicts with Google's own guidelines and puts the site at risk for a gain that can be reversed overnight. Earned coverage, useful published data and genuine partnerships are slower and hold. Ask any candidate directly how it acquires links and treat evasion as an answer.
