What an SEO audit costs, and what changes the number

An SEO audit can mean a crawler report exported to a spreadsheet, or six weeks of analysis by a senior practitioner who ends up rewriting your information architecture. Both are sold under the same two words, which is why quotes for the same site can differ by more than an order of magnitude. This page explains what sits behind each price band, what an audit should deliver at any price, and how to write a brief specific enough that the quotes you receive are actually comparable.

How to get comparable audit quotes

  1. Say what the audit is for. A diagnosis after a traffic drop, a pre-migration check, a due diligence review before an acquisition and a growth roadmap are four different jobs. Naming the purpose changes the scope and usually the price.
  2. State the site's size and stack. Page count, platform, whether content is rendered client side, how many languages and countries, and whether a migration is planned. These four facts move an audit quote more than anything else you can tell a provider.
  3. Ask what access is required, and grant the minimum. A real audit needs read access to analytics and Search Console. Grant read rather than write, keep ownership of both properties, and note that any provider asking for write access at the audit stage should explain exactly why.
  4. Require a prioritised fix list, not a findings dump. The deliverable that earns the fee is a ranked list with an owner and an estimated effort against each item. A four-hundred-item severity table with no sequencing transfers the hard work back to you.

The price bands and what sits behind them

At the bottom, a few hundred dollars buys an automated crawl with light commentary. It will find broken links, missing titles, duplicate meta descriptions and slow templates, and it is genuinely useful on a small site that has never had any attention. It cannot tell you which queries you could win, because no tool has an opinion about your market. In the middle band, low to mid four figures, a practitioner reads the crawl rather than forwarding it, reconciles it against Search Console, looks at what competitors rank for and produces a prioritised roadmap. This is the band most small and mid-sized businesses should buy.

Above that, five-figure audits are usually enterprise work: large catalogues, several markets and languages, a rendering or migration problem, or a due diligence review with money resting on the answer. The extra cost buys log file analysis, rendering tests, template-level recommendations written for developers, and someone senior enough to argue with your engineering team. Paying enterprise prices for a fifty-page brochure site buys none of that, because none of it applies.

What every audit should contain, at any price

Four things. An indexing reconciliation: what the site publishes against what Search Console reports is actually indexed, with the gap explained. A technical section tied to Google's published fundamentals, covering crawl access, page titles, internal linking and page experience, with Core Web Vitals measured on real page loads rather than a single lab test. A content and query section that names specific queries with measured volumes and the pages that should target them, because that is the part a tool cannot produce. And a prioritised action list where each item names its expected effect and who has to do it.

Two things should worry you. A guaranteed outcome attached to the audit, since Google states plainly that no one can guarantee a number one ranking. And a recommendation set that leads with link acquisition volume, which is the layer Google's spam policies police hardest: link schemes intended to manipulate rankings are a stated violation, and sites that break those policies may rank lower or not appear in results at all.

When the audit is free

Free audits exist and some are worth reading, but understand what they are. A free audit is a sales asset, produced quickly, designed to surface enough alarming findings to justify a retainer conversation. That does not make its findings wrong; broken canonical tags are broken whoever noticed them. It does mean the prioritisation is aimed at your signature rather than at your traffic. Treat a free audit as a screening exercise, verify two or three of its claims yourself against Search Console, and pay for the audit that will actually be implemented.

Questions people actually ask

How much should I pay for an SEO audit?
For a small business site, a mid four-figure ceiling buys a thorough human audit with a prioritised roadmap. Below a few hundred dollars you are buying a crawler export. Five-figure quotes should be reserved for large catalogues, multi-market sites, migrations or due diligence, where the extra analysis genuinely applies.
How long does an audit take?
An automated report is same day. A practitioner-led audit of a small site typically runs one to three weeks including access setup and a walkthrough call. Enterprise audits involving log files, rendering tests and multiple markets run four to eight weeks. Insist on a walkthrough call in the price, because a document nobody explains rarely gets implemented.
Is an audit worth buying if I cannot implement it?
Not yet. The value is in the fixes, not the document. If you have no developer time and no content capacity, buy a smaller audit scoped to what you can act on this quarter, or buy implementation and audit together from a provider willing to be measured on the outcome.
Should the auditor also do the implementation?
It is efficient and it is a conflict of interest at the same time. An auditor who will sell the remediation has an incentive to find a large amount of it. Either buy the audit from an independent practitioner, or accept the combined route and have the fix list sanity-checked against Google's own documentation before you approve the budget.
