Home Services Digital Marketing, Compared on Evidence

Home services is a trade where marketing either produces booked jobs or it produces nothing, and the distance between those two outcomes is usually dispatch rather than advertising. Plumbers, electricians, roofers, HVAC contractors, landscapers and remodelers buy under one label but have very different demand patterns, average job values and seasonality, and an agency that treats them all the same will aim your budget at the wrong half of your business. This page compares home services digital marketing providers on published pricing, disclosed minimums and named clients, and sets out what a contractor should insist on before signing anything.

How to compare home services marketing agencies

  1. Make them quote in cost per booked job. Leads and calls are inputs. The number that decides whether the spend works is cost per booked job, and it requires call tracking plus data back from your dispatch software. An agency unwilling to be measured that way is asking to be judged on the easier number.
  2. Check they understand your seasonality. Roofing follows storms, HVAC follows temperature extremes, landscaping follows spring. Ask what the plan does in your peak weeks and what it does in your quiet ones. A flat monthly plan applied to a seasonal trade wastes money at both ends of the year.
  3. Ask for pricing and a disclosed minimum. Get the monthly floor and the recommended media budget as two separate numbers before the discovery call, then compare candidates on both. A low fee attached to an unrealistic media recommendation is not the cheaper proposal it appears to be.
  4. Insist on owning the accounts and the numbers. Your website, ad accounts, analytics, Google Business Profile and call tracking numbers must belong to you and be transferable. Contractors who cannot take their phone numbers when they leave have rented their marketing rather than built it.

What home services programs cost

Fees split from media spend, and both need quoting. Management fees for a single-market contractor typically start in the high hundreds per month for local search and profile work and rise into the low thousands once paid media, landing pages and content production are included. Multi-location operators and franchise groups sit well above that, because every location needs its own profile, its own pages and its own budget.

The variables that move a quote are the number of service areas, the number of trades or service lines, whether Local Services Ads are managed alongside standard campaigns, and whether creative and landing pages are produced. Local Services Ads are worth calling out separately, because Google charges for them per lead rather than per click and requires verification including license and background checks before running.

The foundations that decide everything else

Three things do most of the work in this trade and none of them are clever. A Google Business Profile that is accurate, complete and compliant with Google's guidelines for representing your business, which for contractors who travel to customers usually means a service area rather than a listed street address. A steady flow of honest reviews, since trust is the entire purchase when you are letting someone into your home. And service pages that answer the questions people actually ask before booking: pricing signals, licensing and insurance, warranty terms, and how quickly you can get there.

Google's local ranking guidance names relevance, distance and prominence as the factors behind local results, which is a useful frame for a contractor: you cannot change where a customer lives, so the work is making sure your profile and pages precisely describe what you do and building the prominence that comes from real reviews and real local presence. Any agency proposing keyword-stuffed business names, listed addresses you do not staff, or incentivised reviews is proposing something that risks the listing your whole local visibility depends on.

Questions people actually ask

Should a contractor start with SEO or paid ads?
Paid ads produce calls this week and organic work compounds over quarters, so most contractors need both with the mix shifting over time. If cash flow needs jobs now, start with paid and fund the organic foundations from the return rather than delaying them entirely.
How do I measure whether the marketing works?
Unique tracking numbers per channel, a defined standard for what counts as a qualified call, and booked job data fed back from dispatch. Without those three, every conversation about performance is a matter of opinion, and the agency's opinion will usually be sunnier than yours.
Are lead marketplaces worth using alongside an agency?
They can fill capacity, but the leads are usually shared and the unit price never falls, so cost per booked job tends to be high. Treat them as a way to fill a quiet week rather than as a substitute for building demand you own.
What should the first ninety days deliver?
Profile and listing cleanup, call tracking installed, core service and area pages written or rewritten, campaigns live with tight geography and a working negative keyword list, and a first honest report on qualified calls. Strategy documents alone are not ninety days of work.
