What digital marketing consultant services should deliver

A consultant and an agency solve different problems, and buying the wrong one is the most common expensive mistake in this market. A consultant sells judgement: what to do, in what order, and what to stop. An agency sells execution capacity. Buying a consultant when you have nobody to implement the recommendations produces an excellent document that changes nothing; buying execution before anybody has decided the strategy produces a lot of activity aimed at the wrong thing. This page sets out what consultant engagements should contain, how they are priced, and how to make sure the advice actually gets implemented.

How to buy consulting that gets used

  1. Write the decision you need help making. Consulting is bought well when the brief names a decision: which channels to fund next year, why acquisition cost is rising, whether to build a team or outsource. A brief that asks for a review of everything returns a review of everything.
  2. Agree the deliverable and who implements it. Name the artefacts (audit, channel plan, measurement framework, hiring specification) and name the person or team who will act on them. Unimplemented recommendations are the standard failure mode, and it is a scoping failure rather than an advice failure.
  3. Fix the access and the timeline up front. A consultant needs read access to analytics, ad accounts and the search property, plus interviews with sales and support. Agree the access list and the interview schedule at kickoff, because delays here consume the engagement's timeline.
  4. Book the follow-up before the work starts. Schedule a review 60 or 90 days after delivery to check what was implemented and what it did. Knowing that session exists changes how recommendations are written, and it is the cheapest quality control available.

What a consultant engagement should actually produce

A useful engagement produces four things. An honest assessment of the current position, including what is working, which is the part most reviews skip. A prioritised plan with sequencing and rough effort, so somebody can start on Monday. A measurement framework that defines what counts as success and how it will be observed, since most disagreements about marketing are really disagreements about attribution. And a set of decisions the consultant recommends against, because a plan with nothing removed from it is a wish list rather than a strategy.

What it should not produce is a generic best-practice deck. The test is whether the document could have been written about another company by changing the name. If it could, you bought a template.

Pricing models, and which suits which problem

Consultants price by day rate, by fixed-scope project, or by a monthly advisory retainer that buys a set amount of time and access. Day rates suit short diagnostics. Fixed-scope projects suit a defined question with a defined artefact, and they price the risk of scope creep into the number. Advisory retainers suit an in-house team that needs a senior voice regularly rather than a document once, and they are the model most likely to result in implementation, because the consultant is present while the work happens.

Whichever model, ask who does the work. Consulting is a personal service, and the value is in the specific individual's experience, so a proposal that will not name the person delivering it is selling a brand rather than judgement. Ask for their background in your sector, and speak to a client they advised at least a year ago, since the useful question is what survived.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a consultant or an agency?
A consultant if the question is what to do and in what order; an agency if the plan exists and you need hands to deliver it. Many buyers need a short consulting engagement first, then execution capacity aimed by it.
How is a digital marketing consultant priced?
Usually a day rate, a fixed-scope project fee or a monthly advisory retainer. Match the model to the problem: diagnostics fit day rates, defined questions fit projects, and ongoing decisions fit retainers.
How do I stop the recommendations sitting on a shelf?
Name the implementer before the work starts, require a sequenced plan rather than a list, and book a follow-up review at 60 or 90 days. Implementation is a scoping decision made at the beginning, not a hope at the end.
What access should a consultant be given?
Read access to analytics, ad accounts and the search property, plus time with sales and support. Read-only is sufficient for a diagnostic, and it keeps your accounts safe while the engagement runs.
