Choosing an SEO company in Baltimore on published evidence

Baltimore buys search in at least four different shapes. A hospital group or a practice near the medical campuses needs pages that survive a compliance read. A logistics or port services firm sells nationally and does not care where its agency parks. A defence or government contractor along the corridor to Washington is chasing a very small number of named buyers. And in Towson, Canton and the county there are trades and clinics whose entire pipeline is a map pack and a phone that rings. Those four buyers get pitched near identical retainers. This page shows what the firms in our index actually publish about price, minimum engagement and named clients, and then gives you a sequence that turns a list of names into a shortlist you can compare on paper.

How to shortlist an SEO company in Baltimore

  1. Decide first whether your market is local or national. Local search is listings, service area pages, reviews and proximity, and a Baltimore address genuinely helps because the agency knows which neighbourhoods a customer will actually drive between. National search is content depth, technical health and links, and the agency postcode is irrelevant to the result. Write down which one you are before you take a single sales call, because it changes who belongs on the list.
  2. Ask for the minimum engagement in writing. The smallest retainer a firm will accept removes more names from a shortlist than any other question, and it takes one email to answer. Where a starting price is published, read it as a floor for the narrowest possible scope rather than a forecast of what your programme will cost. A firm that will not put a minimum in writing is telling you something useful about how it prices.
  3. Establish what is delivered in house. Content writing, development, digital PR and paid media are routinely subcontracted. That is normal and not disqualifying, but it changes turnaround, accountability and who you speak to on a Tuesday when a deployment breaks a template. Ask which parts leave the building, which contractor does them, and whether that contractor is in your time zone.
  4. Own the measurement before the first invoice. Create the analytics property and the Search Console profile yourself and grant the agency access, never the reverse. Agree in advance what counts as a lead, which queries are tracked and how a form fill is deduplicated against a phone call. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO recommends giving read access for an audit rather than handing over write access to your site.

What Baltimore firms publish, and what they hold back

Our index records what each agency states on its own website, with the date we read it. Published pricing is the rarest disclosure in this trade and the most useful one, because a firm willing to name a starting retainer in public has already decided which buyers it is not chasing. Disclosed minimums are the next most useful, and named clients with live links are the third, since a case study without a client name cannot be checked by anyone.

What is held back is equally informative. A site with no pricing, no minimum and no named work is not necessarily a bad agency, but it is an agency whose comparison has to happen entirely inside a sales call, on their terms and their timetable. If you are running a shortlist of five, expect two of them to publish nothing at all, and plan to extract the same three facts from each by email so your comparison stays symmetrical.

What actually moves the price in this market

Three things drive a Baltimore retainer more than anything on a rate card. The first is competitive density: ranking a personal injury firm or a roofer in a metro this size is a different job from ranking a niche industrial supplier, and the honest agencies price it that way. The second is how much of the work is production rather than strategy, since a programme that needs forty new pages costs what forty pages cost regardless of who writes the plan.

The third is your own site. An old platform, a broken template, a migration nobody documented or a thin service section will absorb months of a retainer before anything is aimed at a query. Ask candidates to tell you, before the proposal, what they think is technically wrong with your site today. The answers separate people who looked from people who pasted a template, and it costs you nothing to ask.

Questions worth asking every candidate

Ask who writes the content and whether you can see three pages they wrote for a client in a comparable trade. Ask how they decide which queries to target, and insist on seeing the actual list rather than a category. Ask what happens in month one, month three and month six, and what would make them tell you the programme is not working.

Then ask about exit. Who owns the content, the analytics, the Search Console history and any pages built on a subdomain the agency controls. A firm that answers all of that plainly, in writing, before a contract, is usually the same firm that reports plainly afterwards.

Questions people actually ask

Does an SEO company need to be based in Baltimore?
Only if your customers are. Local search rewards proximity, listings and reviews, and an agency that knows the difference between Federal Hill and Fells Point writes better service area pages. If you sell nationally, location is a preference rather than a qualification, and you should widen the shortlist rather than pay a premium for a nearby office.
What should I expect to pay?
There is no single figure, which is why we record what each agency publishes rather than quoting an average. Price tracks the competitiveness of your queries, how many pages have to be produced and how much technical repair your site needs first. Ask each candidate for a minimum engagement and a scope of work, and compare those two things side by side rather than comparing headline rates.
How long before search work produces leads?
Longer than paid search and shorter than most people fear on a healthy site. A site with sound technical foundations and existing pages can move within a quarter, while a new domain or one recovering from a bad migration usually needs longer. Any agency promising ranking positions on a date is promising something no provider controls.
How do I check a case study is real?
Look for a named client with a working link, then check that the pages described actually exist and that the client still refers to the work. An unnamed case study can be verified by nobody, including us, which is why our index records named clients as a separate field from claimed results.
