Artificial intelligence is the most crowded pitch in technology press, which makes public relations for an AI company both more necessary and much harder than it was two years ago. Reporters covering the field have become sceptical of capability claims, buyers have learned to ask what the model actually does, and regulators have started taking an interest in how AI products are advertised. An AI PR agency is selling you a path through that: people who can hold a technical conversation, a set of relationships with reporters who cover the field seriously, and the judgement to tell you when a story is not a story. This guide sets out what the work involves, what moves the price, and how to check a candidate before you sign.
What separates a real AI practice from a rebrand
Almost every technology PR firm now claims an AI practice, so the useful question is what the team can actually do unsupervised. Ask them to explain, in their own words, what your product does and where it sits relative to the model providers, the tooling layer and your competitors. Someone who can do that will write a pitch a reporter reads; someone who cannot will send your engineering team drafts to rewrite every week, which is the most expensive form of cheap PR there is. Ask which AI reporters and researchers they have spoken to in the past quarter, by name, and what those people are currently interested in. Ask what they would advise you not to announce. The strongest signal is a firm that pushes back on your framing during the pitch, because that is the same instinct that stops you making a claim your model cannot support in front of an audience that will test it.
Claims, evaluation and the regulatory floor
Marketing an AI product is advertising, and the ordinary rules about substantiation apply to it exactly as they apply to anything else. If you say your system is more accurate, faster or safer, you need evidence for that claim in the form a sceptic would accept, which usually means a named benchmark, a described evaluation method and an honest statement of what was not tested. The FTC's guidance on advertising and endorsements is direct that objective claims require substantiation and that material connections behind testimonials must be disclosed, and an agency that treats this as your legal team's problem rather than part of its own drafting standard is a liability. In practice, agree in writing who drafts capability claims, who signs them off, what evidence is attached to each, and what the correction process is when a benchmark result is superseded. This is also good publicity strategy rather than only compliance: in a field where everyone is claiming state of the art, the company that publishes its evaluation method is the one a reporter can safely quote.
What the retainer buys and what moves the price
An AI PR retainer typically covers messaging and positioning, media relations, executive visibility including conference and podcast placement, launch and funding announcements, and increasingly analyst and research community relations. Content production, awards entries and event support are sometimes included and sometimes billed on top, which is where seemingly similar quotes diverge. The main driver of cost is seniority: this category rewards senior operators who can hold a technical conversation, and a programme staffed by juniors with occasional partner review costs much less and delivers much less. Geography is the second driver, since North American and European technology media are separate markets. Most agencies work on a monthly retainer with a minimum term of three to twelve months, and it is reasonable to ask for a named staffing plan with hours, plus what the fee covers in a month when you have no news, because those months will happen.
Measuring it without fooling yourself
Coverage volume is a poor measure in this category, because AI stories are easy to get and hard to get right. Set the measures before the contract starts. Useful ones include share of voice in the specific publications your buyers actually read, whether your positioning language survives into articles rather than being replaced by the reporter's own framing, inbound enquiries and applications that cite coverage, and how often your sales team uses the material. Analyst and research mentions matter if you sell into enterprises. Impressions and advertising value equivalents measure nothing and should be refused. Ask for a monthly report that lists the stories pitched and the ones that did not land as well as the ones that did, because a pipeline you can see is the only way to tell a slow month from a stalled programme.
Questions people ask about ai pr agency
Do we need an AI specialist or will a general tech agency do?
It depends on how technical your story is. If your differentiator is a model, an evaluation result or an architecture, you need people who understand it, and a general agency will burn your engineers' time. If your differentiator is a business outcome in a familiar vertical, a strong general B2B technology agency with sector relationships is often the better and cheaper fit.
How much of the work will still land on our team?
More than agencies imply. Expect to supply technical review, executive availability for interviews and approvals on a short clock. Agree in advance who your single internal owner is and how fast approvals must move, because a slow approval chain is the most common reason a well-run retainer produces little.
Is a funding announcement worth a retainer on its own?
Rarely. A raise gets covered largely on the numbers and the investors, and a project fee can handle it. A retainer earns its keep in the quarters after, when you need a rhythm of product, customer and research stories to stay visible. Buy the retainer for the year you intend to keep talking.
How do we avoid overclaiming?
Write the claim, then write the evidence next to it, and delete any claim without evidence a sceptic would accept. Name the benchmark, describe the method and state the limits. Ask the agency to hold that standard in its own drafts. It costs a few headlines and saves the one correction that would have followed you around.
