SEO services for healthcare, hired on evidence

Healthcare search is governed twice over: once by Google, which treats medical topics as material where trust and expertise matter most, and once by privacy law, which decides what a marketing vendor may touch at all. That narrows the field of agencies genuinely equipped to do this work. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, so a provider organisation can shortlist on evidence rather than on a claim of healthcare experience.

How to choose a healthcare SEO provider

  1. Name the service line the work is for. Orthopaedics, behavioural health, urgent care and a multi-site primary care group are different searches, different competitors and different regulatory exposure. Decide which service line the engagement exists to fill before shortlisting, because it changes the page plan, the clinical review burden and which agencies are relevant at all.
  2. Ask who provides and reviews the clinical content. Medical content that no clinician has reviewed is a liability as well as a weak ranking bet. Ask which clinician signs off, how their credentials appear on the page, and how much of your clinical staff's time the agency's plan assumes. That time is the real cost of a healthcare content programme.
  3. Settle data handling before anything else. Establish in writing what patient information the agency will touch, which analytics and advertising tools receive site data, and what agreements govern that. This is a compliance decision that has to be made before campaign design, not retrofitted after a vendor has already installed tracking.
  4. Ask what they will change on the location profiles. For any organisation with physical sites, the Business Profiles are the highest-value asset and the easiest to damage. Ask exactly what will change, who holds access, how multiple locations and practitioner profiles are handled, and what happens to that access when the contract ends.
  5. Verify the agency against its own published pages. Named team, published address, printed prices where they exist, and case detail that names the client organisation. Everything listed in this index is held to that standard, and an agency claiming healthcare depth with no verifiable healthcare work published is asking you to take the central claim on faith.

Why healthcare content is judged harder

Google's published guidance on helpful content asks whether material provides original information, reporting, research or analysis, whether it presents information in a way that makes you want to trust it with clear sourcing and evidence of the expertise involved, and whether it is self-evident to visitors who authored it. It also asks whether the use of automation, including AI generation, is self-evident through disclosures. Trust sits at the centre of that framework, and the others contribute to it.

For a provider organisation that translates into a specific and unglamorous requirement: pages attributed to named clinicians with visible credentials, reviewed and dated, citing the sources they rely on. An agency proposing a volume of unsigned generic articles is proposing the exact shape of content this guidance is written against, whatever the word count.

Patient information is not a marketing asset

The HIPAA Privacy Rule defines marketing as a communication about a product or service that encourages recipients to purchase or use it, and generally requires written patient authorisation before protected health information is used or disclosed for marketing, with limited exceptions such as face-to-face communication and promotional gifts of nominal value. Selling patient lists to a third party without authorisation from each person on the list is prohibited.

In practice this decides the legality of a proposed campaign before anyone assesses its quality. Uploading a patient list into an advertising platform, publishing a case study containing identifiable clinical detail, or building a recall campaign from clinical records all require the authorisation position settled first. Ask any agency where data travels, who else holds it and what agreement governs it, and make the answers contractual.

Local search across multiple sites

Most healthcare demand is local, and Google keeps its published local ranking factors to three: relevance, distance and prominence. Its help pages add that complete hours help, that being clear about what kind of business you are helps, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. It also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, which disposes of any vendor implying preferential placement.

The complication for a multi-site organisation is scale and consistency: every location and, in some models, every practitioner has a profile that can drift out of date. That maintenance is dull and it outperforms most of the clever work an agency will propose alongside it. Ask a candidate how many location profiles it currently manages and what its process is for keeping hours, categories and service lists accurate across all of them.

Questions people actually ask

Can a healthcare SEO agency use our patient data?
Only within what privacy law allows. The HIPAA Privacy Rule generally requires written patient authorisation before protected health information is used for marketing and prohibits selling patient lists without it. Settle data handling in the contract before campaign design starts.
Who should write medical content for a provider site?
Writers working from clinician input, with a named clinician reviewing and credited on the page. Google's guidance asks whether it is self-evident who authored content and whether the expertise involved is evident, which unsigned generic articles cannot satisfy.
Can an agency guarantee rankings for our service lines?
No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and its Business Profile help says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Judge proposals on named deliverables and reporting, not on promised positions.
How should a multi-site organisation handle location pages?
One accurate profile and one substantial page per real location, maintained rather than generated. Google's local factors are relevance, distance and prominence, and stale hours or wrong categories undo more visibility than most content programmes create.
