SEO optimization company, compared on evidence
An SEO optimization company sells improvement to a site's organic visibility: technical fixes so pages can be crawled and indexed, content so they deserve to rank, and authority work so they are trusted. The category name is broad enough to cover a solo consultant doing careful audit work and a call-centre operation selling packages by the hundred, which is why the comparison has to be made on published evidence rather than on the sales call. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves: pricing where they print it, specialisation, and proof you can verify from their own pages.

How to compare providers
- Decide which layer you are buying. Technical, content and authority are three different disciplines sold under one label. Name the one you believe is holding the site back and ask each bidder whether it agrees, with evidence from your site rather than a generic package tier.
- Ask the questions Google publishes for buyers. Examples of previous work and success stories, whether the provider follows Google Search Essentials, what results to expect and in what timeframe, how the work will be measured, and experience in your industry and geographic market. Ask for the answers in writing.
- Limit access until the work is agreed. For an audit, Google's guidance says to grant only read access to Search Console at that stage and not write access. Extend permissions when implementation is agreed, and keep ownership of analytics, Search Console and any accounts opened for you.
- Price against published floors. Only a minority of agencies print their prices, and those printed tiers are the market's public reference points. Ask each finalist where its quote sits against them and what the difference buys, expressed in named deliverables rather than in hours.
What a genuine optimisation programme contains
Technical work makes pages eligible: crawlable, renderable, indexed under the right canonical, fast enough on a phone. Google's starter guide is direct that crawlers need access to the same resources a browser gets, including CSS and JavaScript, and that the URL Inspection tool is how you confirm a page can be crawled. That layer is diagnosable and should be delivered as a ranked work list with owners.
Content work is where the leverage usually is. Google's guidance states that creating content people find compelling and useful will likely influence a site's presence in results more than any other suggestion in its guide. In practice that means pages aimed at questions your buyers actually type, written by someone who knows the subject and reviewed by someone who knows your business.
Authority work earns links and mentions from sources that already carry weight. It is the slowest layer, the easiest to fake and the one Google polices hardest, which is why the sourcing question belongs in the contract.
Warning signs Google itself names
Google's hiring guidance lists them plainly: ranking guarantees, unsolicited email pitches, claims of a special relationship with Google or priority submission, and unwillingness to explain methods. It adds that Google does not endorse third-party SEO tools and that such tools have no access to internal ranking data, so a finding that exists only inside a vendor's scoring dashboard deserves a second look.
Google's spam policies name the tactics with real downside: link spam, meaning links created primarily to manipulate rankings; scaled content abuse, meaning many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings rather than help users; doorway abuse, meaning pages built to rank for specific similar queries; and cloaking, meaning different content shown to users and search engines. Sites that violate the policies may rank lower in results or not appear at all, so ask in writing where links and content come from before signing.
Measuring the work honestly
Rankings alone are a poor scorecard because they move with the searcher, the device and the day. Ask for organic entries to the pages the strategy targets, conversions from those entries, and the movement of the query set named in the proposal, alongside a change log so you can tell which effect followed which action.
Set the horizon before the first report. Google's starter guide says some changes take effect in a few hours while others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change had beneficial effects. Agree the review points at the start so neither side is renegotiating patience in month three.
Questions people actually ask
- What does an SEO optimization company actually do?
- Technical work so pages can be crawled and indexed, content work so they deserve to rank for real queries, and authority work so the site is trusted. A proposal that covers only one layer is quoting part of the job; ask which layer it believes is binding for you and why.
- How long before we see results?
- Google's starter guide says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before assessing any single change. Judge strategy over quarters and use the change log to attribute movement.
- Can any company guarantee a #1 ranking?
- No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking and treats such promises as a warning sign when hiring an SEO. Expect a forecast range with named assumptions and reporting that shows whether it held.
- How do I check an agency before the first call?
- From its own pages: published address, named team, printed prices where they exist, case detail that names the client or the outcome, and whether the agency ranks for its own specialty phrase. Everything listed here is held to that standard.
