Law SEO services, bought compliance-first
Law SEO services are search marketing for a practice whose website is also regulated advertising. That single fact reorders the buying process: before scope and price come the questions of what the content may claim, who may be paid for what, and who reviews a page before it goes live. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, so the shortlist starts from verifiable evidence. Nothing here is legal advice, and attorney advertising rules vary by state; your own bar's rules control.

How to buy legal search work
- Fix the practice areas and jurisdictions first. A firm cannot rank everywhere for everything, and a proposal covering every practice area in every county is a spending plan rather than a strategy. Rank your matter types by value and by how much of that work you actually want more of, then buy against that order.
- Put bar review in the workflow, not after it. Decide who at the firm checks copy against your state's rules and make that a gate before publication. Rules modelled on Rule 7.2 require the name and contact information of at least one responsible lawyer or firm on a communication, and restrict specialization claims to named certifying bodies.
- Audit how links and content are sourced. Ask in writing where links come from, whether any placement is paid, who writes practice-area content and whether a lawyer reviews it. Google's spam policies name link spam and scaled content abuse and say violating sites may rank lower in results or not appear at all.
- Report to signed matters, not to sessions. Agree how an organic entry is traced to an enquiry and an enquiry to a signed matter, who builds that path and who owns the accounts. Without it, a year of reporting can look successful while the intake calendar says otherwise.
The rules that shape the scope
State conduct rules treat a firm's website and marketing as communications about a lawyer's services. Under rules modelled on Rule 7.2, a lawyer may pay the reasonable costs of advertising, including directory listings, online advertisements, airtime and website design, but may not give anything of value to a person for recommending the lawyer's services. A recommendation, in the North Carolina formulation, is a communication that endorses or vouches for a lawyer's credentials, abilities, competence, character or other professional qualities.
That distinction is where several common marketing products sit. Paying a lead generator can be permissible where the generator does not recommend the lawyer and its communications comply with the truthfulness rule; paying an entity that states, implies or creates a reasonable impression that it is recommending you is not. The same rules require a responsible lawyer's name and contact details on the communication and permit only nominal gifts of appreciation that are not conditioned on future referrals. Details differ between states, so read your own and treat this page as background rather than advice.
What a competent legal SEO engagement looks like
Content built practice area by practice area, answering what a person in trouble actually types, written or reviewed by someone who knows the jurisdiction. Google's guidance states that content people find compelling and useful will likely influence a site's presence in search more than any other single suggestion, which in this market means depth on the matter type rather than volume across the county.
Local visibility for firms with an office: Google's Business Profile help describes local results as a combination of relevance, distance and prominence and says a business with complete and accurate information is more likely to appear. Technical health underneath, so pages are crawlable and fast. And an intake path that is actually answered, because search work that fills a voicemail box has not produced a client.
Risk, and what nobody can promise
Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and lists ranking guarantees, unsolicited pitches, claimed special relationships with Google and unwillingness to explain methods among the warning signs when hiring an SEO. In legal search those promises are especially common because the click prices are high enough to fund aggressive selling.
The tactics behind the promise carry the risk. Doorway abuse, meaning pages created to rank for specific similar queries, describes the county-page sprawl sold to firms wanting instant coverage. Scaled content abuse covers pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings rather than help users. Sites violating those policies may rank lower or not appear at all, and the professional obligation for what the site says stays with the lawyer regardless of who typed it.
Questions people actually ask
- What should law SEO services include?
- Practice-area content reviewed by a lawyer, local visibility work for each office, technical health, an auditable link and digital PR method, and reporting that traces organic entries through enquiries to signed matters. Bar review should be a gate in the publishing workflow.
- Do advertising rules apply to SEO content?
- Yes. A firm's website is a communication about a lawyer's services. Rules modelled on Rule 7.2 restrict paying anything of value for a recommendation and require a responsible lawyer's name and contact information. Rules vary by state; this is general information, not legal advice.
- Can we pay for referrals or recommendations?
- Generally no. Under rules modelled on Rule 7.2 a lawyer may pay the reasonable costs of advertising but may not give anything of value for a recommendation, and payments to a lead generator are restricted where the generator implies it is recommending the lawyer. Check your state's version.
- Can an agency promise a first-page ranking for our practice area?
- No. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking and treats guarantees as a warning sign. Ask for a forecast range, the assumptions behind it, and what the agency will change if the range is missed.
