Home service digital marketing, priced honestly

For a plumber, roofer, HVAC contractor or electrician, digital marketing is a lead-flow utility rather than a branding exercise. The job is to be visible when someone with a burst pipe searches at nine in the evening, and to be reachable in one tap when they do. That makes the purchase unusually measurable, and it also makes it unusually easy to overpay, because the same three tactics, profile management, local pages and paid search, are sold at wildly different prices by firms that all sound alike. This index compares agencies on what they publish about themselves rather than on how confidently they sell.

How to buy home service digital marketing

  1. Fix the Google Business Profile before anything else. Google says local results are ranked mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Categories, service area, hours, photos and reviews are the levers you actually control, and they cost nothing but attention.
  2. Insist on call tracking you can audit. Ask which number rings on each page, where the recordings live, and who can log in. A programme measured only in form fills will undercount a trade where most jobs start with a phone call, and an agency that owns the tracking numbers can take your call history with it when it leaves.
  3. Separate the media from the management fee. Ask for ad spend and agency fee as two numbers on the proposal. A fee quoted as a share of spend rewards the agency for raising your costs, which is the wrong incentive when clicks in home services are among the most expensive in local search.
  4. Ask what changes in the slow season. Demand in most trades swings hard with weather and season. Ask each finalist what it does differently in February and in July, whether the retainer flexes, and where budget goes when the phone is already ringing. One flat plan applied all year was never built for your trade.

What the money actually buys

A credible home services programme has three parts running together, and a proposal that covers one of them is quoting a fraction of the job. The first is the Google Business Profile: correct primary category, an honest service area, complete hours and attributes, photographs of real crews and vehicles, and a steady flow of reviews. The second is the website: one real page per service and per town you genuinely serve, fast enough to load on a phone with one bar of signal, with the phone number visible without scrolling. The third is paid search, which buys visibility on emergency queries while organic position takes months to earn.

Prices vary mostly with how many towns and how many trades you want covered. A single-trade shop in one metro is a far smaller build than a company running plumbing, heating and electrical across nine suburbs, because each combination needs its own page, its own tracking number and its own review base. Ask every finalist to quote against a written list of service and town pairs, and the proposals become comparable in an afternoon.

Where home service budgets get wasted

The most common waste is paying for keyword-stuffed profile names and duplicate listings. Google's guidelines require a business profile to represent the business as it is consistently represented in the real world, and adding city names or service keywords to the business name is not permitted, with suspension as a possible consequence. The vendor who created the violation loses nothing when the profile is suspended. You do.

The second is buying links. Google's guidance on hiring search help warns against firms that talk about link popularity schemes or submitting a site to thousands of search engines, and describes those exercises as typically useless. For a local trade, a handful of real citations, a supplier listing and genuine local press outperform any purchased package, and they carry none of the risk.

Questions people actually ask

How much should a home services company expect to spend?
It depends on how many trades and towns you cover, not on a package tier. Ask each agency to price against a written list of service and town pairs, and to split the agency fee from the media budget. Comparing two proposals on the monthly total alone tells you almost nothing.
Can an agency guarantee me the map pack?
No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and its hiring guidance lists ranking guarantees among the warning signs. A guarantee is evidence that the provider is either misinformed or willing to mislead you, and both are disqualifying.
Do I need a local agency?
Not necessarily. Trade experience usually matters more than a nearby office, because the mechanics are the same in every metro and the differences are seasonality and competition. Insist either way on named clients in your trade whom you can telephone.
How quickly does this work?
Paid search can produce calls the week it is switched on. Local organic visibility moves over a quarter and is fairly judged at two, because reviews, citations and pages accumulate. Any agency promising organic map pack results in weeks is describing a timeline Google does not support.
