Choosing an SEO writing service
An SEO writing service sells pages that are meant to answer a real search and stand up as writing. The two halves are often bought from people who are good at only one of them, which is how a site ends up with keyword-shaped articles nobody finishes reading. This index lists 134 agencies on what they publish about themselves, including their own writing, which is the most direct evidence a buyer of words can get before commissioning any.

How to commission SEO writing
- Read their own pages first. A writing supplier publishes its work product for free. Read three of its articles end to end and ask whether you would have kept reading if you had landed on them from a search. That single test filters more suppliers than any capability deck.
- Ask who writes and who edits. Named writers, a named editor, and a stated position on subject matter expertise for regulated or technical topics. A rotating freelance pool with no editor produces variable work, and the variance shows up in the pages nobody reviewed.
- Fix the brief and the source standard. Agree what a brief contains, who supplies the research, whether original data or interviews are included, and whether claims must be sourced. Google's guidance asks whether content shows original information, reporting, research or analysis, and briefs are where that is decided.
- Settle AI use and disclosure in writing. Ask whether AI tools are used, at which stage, and how that is disclosed. Google's own content guidance asks whether the use of automation is self-evident to visitors, so this belongs in the contract rather than in a later discovery.
What separates SEO writing from content writing
Ordinary content writing starts from what a business wants to say. SEO writing starts from what somebody typed, which means the research that precedes the draft is part of the deliverable: which query the page is for, what the searcher is actually trying to do, what the existing results already cover, and what this page will add that they do not. A supplier that accepts a bare keyword and returns an article has skipped the part of the job that decides whether the page ever gets read.
The craft after that is unremarkable and hard: a title and opening that match the query, structure that lets a reader skim to their answer, specifics rather than filler, internal links that lead somewhere useful, and a genuine reason for the page to exist. Google's own documentation warns against keyword stuffing, meaning unnatural repetition or phrases that sound awkward to human readers, and against producing lots of content on many topics in the hope that some performs. A good supplier is arguing for fewer, better pages.
Pricing, volume and the trap in per-word rates
Per-word pricing is easy to compare and it rewards the wrong thing, because length is the one lever a writer can pull without doing more research. Per-piece pricing tied to a defined brief is harder to compare and closer to the value. If you buy by the word, cap the length in the brief and pay for the research separately; otherwise you are commissioning padding at your own request.
Volume deserves the same scepticism. Google's spam policies describe scaled content abuse as many pages generated primarily to manipulate rankings rather than to help users, and explicitly include using AI tools to produce numerous pages without adding value. A supplier that quotes a large monthly page count at a low unit price is describing the shape of that problem, whatever the tooling. The agencies in this index that print their pricing set the honest reference points; ask every finalist to position its quote against them.
Owning what you commission
Agree in writing that copyright in commissioned pages transfers to you on payment, that drafts and research notes are yours, and that the supplier will not resell or republish the work. This is routine and it is the clause most often missing from a small writing contract; sorting it before the first invoice costs nothing and sorting it afterwards can cost a rewrite.
Agencies are listed on this site only on what can be verified from their own published pages: stated process, named team, printed prices and case detail. A writing supplier is the easiest category of all to hold to that standard, because its published pages are the sample.
Questions people actually ask
- What should an SEO writing service deliver per page?
- A brief that names the query and the reader, a draft written to it, an edit by someone other than the writer, a title and meta description, internal link suggestions and any sources used. If research is excluded from the price, say so on the quote rather than discovering it in the first draft.
- Is AI-written content acceptable?
- Google's position turns on value and disclosure rather than the tool: its guidance asks whether the use of automation is self-evident to visitors, and its spam policies name generating many pages primarily to manipulate rankings rather than help users. Ask suppliers where AI sits in their process and put the answer in the contract.
- How many pages a month should I buy?
- As many as you have real questions to answer and editorial capacity to review. Google's own guidance warns against publishing widely in the hope that something performs, so a smaller number of pages that comprehensively answer real queries is the standard the documentation describes.
- Should I pay per word or per piece?
- Per piece against a defined brief, wherever possible. Per-word rates pay for length rather than research, and length is the easiest thing for a supplier to add. If per-word is unavoidable, cap the word count in the brief.
