What digital marketing agency services actually include
Almost every agency site lists the same services, and almost none of them says what a buyer receives each month for the money. This page separates the categories that get bundled under one retainer, explains what each one is worth buying separately, and shows how to compare quotes that look identical on the surface. The index behind it records what each agency publishes about its own pricing and minimums, with the date checked, so a shortlist starts from disclosed evidence rather than from whichever proposal was written most confidently.

How to compare service bundles
- Split the retainer into channels and hours. Ask every candidate to break the monthly fee into search, content, paid media management, social, email and reporting. A bundle that cannot be broken down cannot be compared, and it is also the bundle that hides where the hours actually go.
- Separate media spend from management fee. Paid media quotes often blend the platform spend with the agency's fee, sometimes as a percentage of spend. Insist on seeing both numbers, because a percentage model rewards spending more regardless of whether it works.
- Ask what is produced, in what quantity, per month. Deliverables you can count, pages, campaigns, technical fixes, outreach targets, are the only defence against a retainer that quietly becomes a monthly meeting. Get the quantity into the contract alongside the price.
- Check who does the work and who owns the assets. Ask whether delivery is in house or subcontracted, and confirm in writing that your site, analytics, search property and ad accounts belong to your business with the agency added as a user.
The service categories, and what each is really for
Search work covers technical health, content that answers real queries, and authority earned from other sites. Paid media buys immediate, measurable traffic and stops the moment you stop paying, which makes it a good test bed for messaging and a poor foundation for a business with thin margins. Content is the raw material both depend on. Social and email do relationship work, keeping people who already know you engaged, which means judging them by search-style metrics usually makes them look worse than they are. Conversion work, the least glamorous line on any proposal, is often the highest return, because it improves the yield of every other channel at once.
The common mistake is buying all of them thinly. A retainer spread across six channels typically funds one meaningful action in each, which is the shape of an engagement that produces reports rather than results. Two channels done properly beats six done nominally, and any agency worth hiring will say so before you ask.
What changes the price of a bundle
Scope, industry and delivery model set the number. Scope means locations, languages, page count and campaign complexity. Industry means regulated sectors carry approval cycles and specialist writers, both of which cost hours. Delivery model means in-house teams price differently from coordinated freelancers, and offshore production differs again. None of these is inherently better value, but you should know which one you are buying, because it predicts the quality ceiling.
Two structures deserve extra scrutiny. Percentage-of-spend pricing aligns the agency with larger budgets rather than better outcomes. Long lock-ins with no deliverable schedule transfer all the risk to you. Both are workable when the deliverables and exit terms are written down, and both are traps when they are not.
Questions people actually ask
- Which services should a first-time buyer start with?
- Usually conversion basics and one acquisition channel that matches how your customers actually search. Fix the site's ability to turn visits into enquiries first, because every channel you add afterwards inherits that rate.
- Is a full-service agency better than specialists?
- It is simpler to manage and rarely best at everything. Full service suits buyers who need coordination across channels; specialists suit buyers with one hard problem. Judge by the work in the specific channel you care about most.
- What is a fair management fee for paid media?
- Whatever you can compare. Ask for the fee as a flat monthly figure as well as any percentage, so you can see what it costs at your current spend and at double it, then compare that against other quotes on the same basis.
- What should be in the contract besides the price?
- Counted deliverables per month, named channels, reporting content and cadence, asset ownership, notice period and what happens to work in progress at exit. A price without deliverables is not a comparable quote.
