The Best Marketing for Law Firms, on Evidence
Legal marketing is one of the most expensive categories in the market, which means the cost of choosing badly is unusually high and the number of firms happy to take the money is unusually large. It is also one of the most regulated: what a firm may claim, how referrals may be paid for, and how results may be described are all governed by professional conduct rules, and an agency that does not raise them in the first meeting is a risk rather than a bargain. This page sets out which channels actually work for which practice areas, what the work costs, and how to compare agencies on evidence they have already published rather than on the size of their claims.

How to shortlist a legal marketing agency
- Match the channel to the practice area. Personal injury and family law are driven by urgent local search and speed of response. Corporate and specialist practices are driven by reputation, referral and long-form authority. An agency proposing the same channel mix for both has not read your business.
- Ask how they handle conduct rules. Advertising claims, testimonials, case results and any arrangement that resembles paying for a referral are governed by your bar's rules of professional conduct. Ask which rules they work under, who reviews copy before publication, and how they have handled a rejection.
- Insist on intake being in scope. Most legal marketing fails at the phone rather than the click. Ask what they measure about answered calls, response time and follow-up, and whether intake improvements are inside the engagement or somebody else's problem.
- Verify results you can check yourself. Ask for two firms in comparable practice areas and markets that you may look up by name. Search their main terms, read their pages, and call the number. What you find in ten minutes will tell you more than a case study written by the seller.
What actually works, by practice area
For high-urgency consumer practices, the winning combination is local visibility plus intake speed. The business profile, location and practice-area pages, review flow and a phone that is answered on the first attempt will out-earn almost any content programme, because the client is choosing within hours rather than weeks. Paid search works here too, at prices that are among the highest in any category, which is precisely why tracking and call handling have to be right before the budget is raised.
For business and specialist practices the pattern inverts. Buyers are researching over months, often on referral, and the assets that matter are substantive: written analysis a peer would respect, speaking, publications and a site that makes individual lawyers findable by name and specialism. Paid search plays a supporting role at best. An agency that opens by pitching ad spend to a corporate practice is selling what it knows rather than what you need.
What moves the price
Practice-area competition is the first driver and it is brutal in personal injury, where the same handful of terms are contested by firms with large budgets. Geography is the second: a single-office firm needs a fraction of the pages, profiles and review management of a firm with eight locations. Whether the agency implements or advises is the third, and in legal it matters more than usual because compliance review slows every handoff between agency and firm.
The fourth is content seniority. Legal content written by someone who understands the subject reads differently from content written to a word count, and it is the difference between a page a referring lawyer will send on and a page nobody reads. Expect proposals that include attorney review time in the schedule, and be suspicious of any content plan that does not, because unreviewed legal content is a compliance problem waiting to be discovered.
How to compare proposals without guessing
Put every proposal into the same columns: monthly fee, ad spend separate from fee, minimum term and notice, who implements, what is excluded, and which specific queries each page is aimed at. Then add one legal-specific column: who is accountable for conduct compliance. If the answer is the firm, price in your own review time, because that time is real and it is usually the constraint.
On reporting, insist on signed cases or qualified consultations as the headline number, drawn from your own intake system, with search and ad data from accounts you own. Rankings and traffic are diagnostics, not results. Any agency comfortable being judged on matters rather than impressions is telling you it expects to produce them.
Questions people actually ask
- Is paid search worth it at legal click prices?
- It can be, where case value is high and intake is fast. The arithmetic is unforgiving: work backwards from case value, conversion rate and click cost before committing. If the numbers only work at a conversion rate you have never achieved, fix intake first and revisit.
- Can an agency guarantee cases or rankings?
- No, and a guarantee should end the conversation. Nobody controls search rankings, and arrangements that pay for referred clients raise conduct issues in most jurisdictions. Ask instead for a plan you can check in ninety days and a term you can exit on notice.
- How much should attorney review time be budgeted?
- More than firms expect. Every page, testimonial reference and case description needs a lawyer to look at it, and that queue is where content programmes stall. Name a reviewer, book recurring time, and agree a turnaround with the agency in writing.
- What is the fastest improvement available to most firms?
- Intake. Answering calls promptly, following up missed calls the same day, and recording where each enquiry came from will usually lift signed matters more, and faster, than any change to the marketing itself. It also makes every later marketing decision measurable.
