Choosing a plumbing marketing company on evidence
Plumbing is one of the few categories where marketing performance is visible in a day. The phone either rings with a burst pipe at seven in the morning or it does not, and no dashboard can hide that for long. This makes plumbing an unusually honest market to buy marketing in, and also an unusually noisy one, because every agency that has ever run a home services account claims the category. What separates a plumbing marketing company worth paying from a generalist is whether it understands that most of your revenue arrives from people in a hurry who will call the first credible name they see, and builds the whole programme around being that name.

How to buy plumbing marketing without wasting a quarter
- Split emergency work from planned work. Burst pipes, blocked drains and no hot water are urgent searches won on speed and proximity. Repipes, water heaters and bathroom work are considered purchases won on trust and reviews. They need different pages, different offers and often different budgets.
- Fix the answering problem first. Paid clicks and map visibility both deliver calls, and a missed call is a competitor's job. Before any agency spends a dollar, agree who answers out of hours, how fast, and what happens to a voicemail. Most underperforming plumbing accounts are intake failures wearing a marketing costume.
- Insist on call tracking you own. You need to know which channel produced which booked job, which means tracked numbers, recorded outcomes and a way to mark a call as a real job rather than a price shopper. If the tracking account is in the agency's name, the history leaves when the agency does.
- Check the review process is lawful. Reviews decide who gets the emergency call, so agencies feel pressure to manufacture them. The Federal Trade Commission's endorsement guidance treats fake or incentivised reviews without disclosure as deceptive, and the risk sits with you, not the vendor.
What moves the price
Market size is the first driver. A single truck operation in a small town needs listing accuracy, a handful of service pages and a modest ad budget, while a multi truck company covering a metro is buying against franchise competitors with real budgets and needs paid search, map coverage across several service areas, and enough content to support them. The second driver is whether media spend is included. A retainer that includes the ad budget and a management fee are very different numbers, and comparing them without asking is how buyers convince themselves one agency is half the price of another.
The third is production. Photography of your own vans and technicians, written service pages that describe your actual process, and location pages for the suburbs you genuinely cover all cost real hours. Agencies that fold this into the retainer quote higher than those that expect you to supply copy, and the cheaper quote is only cheaper if you have someone who will actually write it.
How to verify a plumbing marketing company
Ask for two current home services clients and what the booked job count looked like before and after, not the click count. Ask what proportion of tracked calls became jobs, because an agency that has never looked at that number is optimising for the wrong thing. Ask to see a service page it wrote and check whether it reads like a plumber wrote it or like a template with a keyword dropped in, since the second kind fails both readers and the helpful content guidance Google publishes.
Then check its own house. Is the agency's licensing and address information consistent, does it publish pricing, and can it explain in plain language how it will handle seasonality when a cold snap triples demand for a week? A firm that has run winter in a freezing market will answer that instantly. One that has not will talk about brand awareness.
Questions people actually ask
- Should a plumbing company run ads or invest in organic search?
- Both, in that order of urgency. Paid search fills the calendar this week and is the only reliable way to appear for emergency terms while your organic position is still being built. Organic and map visibility lower the cost per job over time. Cutting the ads the moment organic starts working is the most common and most expensive mistake in this category.
- How much of the budget should go to reviews and listings?
- Very little in money and a lot in discipline. Getting your name, address, hours and licence details identical everywhere costs a few hours, and asking every satisfied customer for an honest review costs nothing but a process. Both outperform most paid tactics for local emergency demand.
- Do I need a separate page for every suburb?
- Only for suburbs you actually serve and can describe specifically, ideally with a job you have done there. Twenty near identical pages with the town name swapped read as filler to both people and search engines, and they dilute the one page that could have ranked.
- What contract terms matter most?
- Ownership of the website, the ad accounts, the call tracking numbers and the review profile, plus a notice period short enough that a bad quarter does not become a bad year. Losing a tracked phone number at the end of a contract is a genuine operational risk, so settle it before you sign.
