Local SEO Service Package: What You Get and What It Costs

A local SEO service package is an attempt to sell an ongoing, open-ended discipline as a fixed monthly product, and whether that works for you depends almost entirely on what sits inside the box. Packaged pricing is genuinely useful: it is comparable, it caps your downside, and a provider willing to publish tiers has already told you more than one that quotes only after a discovery call. The risk is that identical-looking tiers across three providers can contain wildly different amounts of real work, because the line items are written in units that hide effort. This page explains what a package normally contains, what makes one cost more than another, and how to read the tiers so you are comparing work rather than adjectives.

How to compare local SEO packages

  1. Translate every line item into hours or artefacts. A tier that promises optimisation and citations tells you nothing. Convert each line into a countable artefact: how many pages written this month, how many locations managed, how many citations built, how many hours of development. If a provider cannot express a line item as something you could count at month end, it is padding rather than work.
  2. Check what happens to the Google Business Profile. For a local business the profile is the highest-leverage asset in the package, and it is also the one most often handled badly. Confirm who holds owner access, whether categories and services are actively managed, and how review requests are generated. Google publishes guidelines for representing a business, and a package that ignores them can get a profile suspended.
  3. Ask what is excluded and what is billed on top. Ad spend, development time, photography, review platform fees and additional locations are the usual extras. Get them named before you sign, because a low headline tier plus four unbudgeted extras is how a package that looked cheapest ends up costing the most over a year.
  4. Fix the definition of a result and the exit terms. Agree in writing that the reported outcome is qualified enquiries: calls, forms and booked jobs from people who could plausibly buy. Then settle who owns the site, the content, the profile and the analytics if you cancel, and how much notice each side must give. These four sentences prevent most disputes.

What a local SEO package normally contains

Strip away the branding and most packages hold four things. First, Google Business Profile management: categories, services, hours, photographs and a steady flow of genuine reviews, because the map results are where a large share of nearby searches end. Google's own guidance on improving local ranking describes the factors that actually apply, and it is short enough to read before any sales call.

Second, pages that match how buyers search: one per service, one per town or suburb you genuinely serve, and cost pages that answer price questions honestly rather than inviting a call. Third, technical health, meaning a site that loads quickly, can be crawled and does not scatter the same content across several URLs. Fourth, reporting. A package that is mostly blog posts about industry news is aimed at traffic, not at buyers ready to hire.

What makes one package cost more than another

Three inputs explain most of the spread. Location count comes first, because each town needs its own page work and profile signals, and the cost scales close to linearly. Competitive depth comes second: ranking a plumber in a small market is a different job from ranking one in a metro where national lead-generation sites hold the top results and buy their way back every quarter. Seniority comes third, because a retainer where an experienced practitioner does the work costs more than one where briefs are forwarded to a content mill, and that difference is visible in the writing within two months.

Content volume is the honest way to read a tier. Ask how many new pages the package produces each month and who writes them. A tier producing two properly researched service pages a month will beat a tier producing eight thin ones over any horizon that matters, and the cheaper tier is frequently the one producing eight. Where a provider will not answer that question, you are being asked to buy on trust rather than on evidence, which is exactly what comparing published packages was supposed to avoid.

When a package is the wrong purchase

Packages assume a steady monthly rhythm of small improvements. If your actual problem is a single large one, a site migration that lost half its rankings, a technical fault blocking indexing, or a site that has no service pages at all, then a defined project will fix it faster and cheaper than eighteen months of a mid tier. Buy the project, verify it worked, then decide whether an ongoing retainer earns its place.

The other mismatch is scale in the opposite direction. A multi-location or national business usually outgrows packaged pricing quickly, because the work stops being repeatable and starts requiring judgement about structure, internal linking and priority. At that point a scoped retainer with named people is the cheaper instrument, even though its headline number is larger.

Questions people actually ask

Are packaged prices better than custom quotes?
They are more comparable, which is a real advantage. They are better value only when the tier matches your scope. Read the line items as countable artefacts and a package will usually tell you more in five minutes than three quote-only calls will.
How many locations can one package cover?
Most published tiers cover one, with additional locations billed separately. Ask for the per-location increment before you sign, because businesses that expand mid-contract are routinely surprised by it.
Does the package include ad spend?
Almost never. Management fees and media spend are separate, and any package presenting a single blended number should be asked to split it. You should always know exactly how much of your money reaches the ad platform.
What is a reasonable contract length?
Three to six months is a fair minimum given how long the work takes to show, with a rolling monthly term afterwards. Twelve-month lock-ins with no break clause shift all the risk to you and are worth negotiating hard.
