Business marketing companies, compared on what they publish

Business marketing companies is a category that covers almost everything: full-service agencies running brand, demand and creative for a mid-market firm, small studios doing a website and a newsletter, and single-channel specialists in search or paid social who describe themselves broadly to widen the funnel. That breadth is why buyers struggle to compare quotes, since two proposals with the same headline fee can contain completely different work. This index compares firms on what they have committed to in public: published prices, disclosed minimums and named clients, each recorded with the date we checked it.

How to compare business marketing companies

  1. Write the outcome before the channel list. Name the result you are buying (qualified enquiries, retail footfall, pipeline for a named product) and the timeframe. Firms that answer with a channel plan before understanding the outcome are quoting a deliverable, not a result.
  2. Normalise every proposal to the same scope. Rebuild each quote as strategy, production, media and management. Agencies bundle those lines differently, and the cheapest headline fee often excludes creative production or pass-through media entirely.
  3. Check whether the price is published anywhere. Firms that publish a starting retainer have already decided what their floor buys and can rarely move far from it. Firms that publish nothing are not a red flag, but your comparison then starts with a sales call, so spend those calls deliberately.
  4. Ask who does the work and where. Name the people on the account, their seniority, and what is subcontracted. Pitch teams and delivery teams differ at most agencies, and that gap is the most common cause of a disappointing first quarter.

What moves the price

Scope moves it first: a single-channel local engagement is priced in hundreds of dollars a month, a multi-channel national programme with in-house creative in the thousands or tens of thousands. Industry moves it next, because regulated and high-value categories such as healthcare, legal, insurance and financial services carry a specialist premium, both for the expertise and for the slower compliance review cycle. Seniority moves it third: a retainer where a strategist with fifteen years of experience touches the account weekly costs multiples of one where a junior executes a checklist.

The fourth mover is the one buyers overlook, which is who holds the media budget. When the agency buys media on your behalf, ask whether its fee is a percentage of spend, a flat retainer or a hybrid, and ask for the fee restated as a dollar figure at your actual budget. Percentage models are simple but reward larger spend rather than better spend, and the difference over a year is usually larger than the difference between the two firms you are choosing between.

How to verify a marketing company before you sign

Ask for two clients in a comparable size band and call them, focusing on what changed in month four rather than what the onboarding felt like. Ask for the reporting pack a current client receives, since it shows what the agency actually measures and whether it reports to revenue or stops at traffic. Ask who owns the website, the ad accounts, the analytics and the audience data when the relationship ends, and put the answer in the contract, because that clause is trivial to agree at signature and near impossible to win afterwards.

Then test the claims. The Federal Trade Commission requires objective advertising claims to be truthful and substantiated before they are made, and a case study asserting a result is an advertising claim. A firm that can produce the underlying reporting for one published case study within a week is one whose numbers you can trust. Google publishes its own hiring guidance for search work, and its warnings travel well across the whole category: be wary of anyone claiming a special relationship with a platform, promising guaranteed positions, or refusing to explain their methods.

Questions people actually ask

What is a realistic monthly budget for a small business?
It depends far more on the channel mix than on the agency. Single-channel local work sits at the low end of published retainers, while multi-channel programmes with creative production sit far above it. Ask each firm for its floor and what that floor buys, then compare like with like.
Why do most marketing companies not publish prices?
Because most engagements are scoped individually and publishing a floor invites price-shopping. It is not by itself a warning sign, but it means comparison requires sales calls. The index labels who publishes and who does not so you can choose where to spend that time.
Full-service agency or a set of specialists?
A full-service firm reduces coordination work and gives you one accountable party; specialists usually go deeper in their channel. The deciding question is whether anyone on your side has time to coordinate three vendors. If not, the coordination cost outweighs the depth.
What contract terms matter most?
Ownership of accounts and data, notice period, what happens to fees if media spend changes materially, and whether creative production is inside the retainer. Those four decide how an engagement ends and how much a change of plan costs you.
