SEO companies for law firms, compared on evidence

Choosing between SEO companies for law firms is harder than it should be, because the sales material is close to identical across the market and the outcome claims are unverifiable by design. What can be verified is what each agency publishes: whether it prints prices, which practice areas and states it names, whether its own site ranks for the phrase it sells, and whether its case detail is specific enough to check. This index lists 134 agencies on exactly that basis, so the shortlist stage costs an hour rather than a fortnight of calls.

How to compare law firm SEO providers

  1. Filter by practice area and jurisdiction. Personal injury, immigration, family and criminal defence are separate markets with separate competitors and separate costs per click. Ask which practice areas the agency has ranked firms in, and which states' advertising rules it has worked under.
  2. Read the method before the results. Google's hiring guidance says to be careful if a company is secretive or will not clearly explain what it intends to do. Ask for the link sourcing, the content process and who reviews copy for compliance, all in writing, before the pricing conversation.
  3. Apply the guarantee test. Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and names guarantees, claimed special relationships with Google and priority submission offers as warning signs. Any of the three removes an agency from the list rather than starting a negotiation.
  4. Ask what conflicts policy applies. Two firms in the same practice area and the same metro cannot both be the agency's priority. Ask whether the agency takes competing clients in your market and what exclusivity, if any, comes with the retainer.
  5. Insist on account and data ownership. The firm should own its domain, hosting, analytics and Search Console properties, with the agency granted access. Put content ownership and a handover process in the contract so switching provider costs a week and not a rebuild.

What actually distinguishes these agencies

Three things separate providers in this market, and all three are checkable before a call. The first is depth in a practice area, visible in whether the agency writes about legal topics at a level a practising lawyer would accept. The second is compliance awareness: a law firm's marketing is attorney advertising under state conduct rules, and an agency that has never asked which state you practise in has not thought about it. The third is what the agency does with its own site, since a provider that ranks for its own specialty phrase is showing you its ceiling rather than describing it.

Size, awards and client logos are the weakest signals in the set. They are the easiest to acquire and the hardest to connect to what your firm will actually receive each month.

What a first engagement should contain

Prefer a paid audit with a written deliverable over an immediate long retainer. It buys you the agency's diagnosis, its writing standard and its working style at a fraction of the commitment, and the document is yours whether or not you proceed. Grant read access to analytics and Search Console for that work, not write access.

When the retainer starts, fix the publishing rate to what your internal review chain can actually approve, name who signs off on claims, and agree reporting that ties visibility to consultations booked and matters signed. Expect timeframes as ranges rather than dates; the honest version of a forecast states its assumptions.

How this index is built

Agencies appear here on what they publish and what can be verified from their own pages: address, named team, printed prices where they exist, and case detail that names specifics. Placement is never sold and no agency can pay to rank higher in the list. Nothing here is a guarantee of results, and nothing on this site is legal advice; attorney advertising rules vary by state and your own bar's rules control.

Questions people actually ask

How much do law firm SEO companies charge?
Retainers vary widely by practice area, market competitiveness and scope, and only a minority of agencies publish figures. Use the printed prices in this index as reference points, and ask each finalist to position its quote against them and state what falls outside the retainer.
Should we hire a legal specialist or a general SEO agency?
A specialist usually arrives already knowing the practice area vocabulary and the advertising rules, which shortens the ramp. A strong generalist can work if it will name who reviews copy for compliance and can show comparable work in another regulated field.
How do we check an agency's claims before a call?
From its own pages: a real address, a named team, printed prices, case detail specific enough to verify, and whether it ranks for the specialty phrase it sells. Every listing here is held to that standard, and the same test takes minutes on any shortlist.
Can an SEO company promise our firm more cases?
No credible one will. Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and case volume depends on intake, market demand and competitors as well as visibility. Expect forecasts with assumptions and reporting against them.
