SEO services for plumbers, compared on published evidence

Plumbing is an emergency trade with a maintenance business attached, and search marketing that ignores the distinction fails in both directions. The burst pipe at eleven at night is decided in ninety seconds by whoever appears in the map and answers the phone. The bathroom remodel or the water heater replacement is considered for weeks and decided on price transparency, reviews and whether the website looks like a real company. Those two buyers need different pages, different budgets and often different channels. This page shows what the providers in our index publish about price and minimums, and gives you the questions that make a contractor shortlist genuinely comparable before anyone quotes.

How to buy plumbing search without guessing

  1. Separate emergency demand from planned work. Emergency calls are won by map visibility and answer rate, planned jobs by content, reviews and price transparency. Ask any provider how they will report the two separately, because a single blended lead number hides the only distinction that lets you manage the business.
  2. Fix the business listing before buying anything else. An accurate, complete listing with correct hours, real service areas and consistent contact details is the highest return work available to a plumbing company and it is often already broken. Any provider proposing content before checking this is selling from a template.
  3. Filter by disclosed minimum first. The smallest engagement a provider will accept removes more of a shortlist than any other question and takes one email to answer. Where an agency publishes a starting retainer, treat it as a floor rather than the likely monthly bill for a contested service area.
  4. Ask about competing clients in your service area. Local search is zero sum inside a radius, so an agency working for two plumbing companies in the same county is optimising against itself. Ask how many they serve in your area and get the exclusivity position, if any, written into the agreement.

What plumbing focused providers publish, and what they do not

Our index records what each agency states on its own website, with the date we checked, rather than what a survey reports. Home services agencies publish a starting price more often than most categories, because they sell to owner operators who compare options quickly and a transparent floor is part of how they compete. That makes this one of the better categories for price comparison, with the usual caveat that a published number is a floor and not a forecast.

What is published far less often is what the retainer actually buys in a given month: how many pages, how much technical work, whether review generation or paid search is included. Two providers at the same monthly figure can differ by a factor of three in output, so ask for the deliverables in writing before comparing the numbers as though they were equivalent.

Where plumbing search programmes usually fail

The most common failure is not traffic, it is answer rate. A homeowner standing in water calls the next number when the first rings out, so unanswered calls during peak hours are leads you paid for and handed to a competitor. Before increasing spend, measure the share of tracked calls missed during business hours and after them. Fixing that is cheaper and faster than generating more calls, and a provider worth hiring will say so before quoting.

The second failure is mass produced service area pages. Dozens of near identical town pages generated from a list are the pattern Google's spam policies describe as content made primarily for ranking rather than for people, and undoing the damage frequently costs more than the pages ever earned. Build one page per place you genuinely dispatch to, with real detail, and stop there.

Reviews, and the rules that come with them

Reviews are the highest leverage asset a plumbing company owns and the fastest route to a regulatory problem. FTC endorsement guidance requires testimonials to reflect honest opinions and material connections to be disclosed, and the Commission announced a final rule in 2024 aimed squarely at fake reviews and testimonials. Asking every completed job for a review, without incentives and without filtering for likely positives, is both compliant and more effective over a year than any campaign.

Ask a candidate agency exactly how it generates review volume. If the answer involves gating unhappy customers, offering discounts for reviews, or a service that produces them, ask for it again in writing and then decline. The exposure sits with the business whose name is on the reviews, not with the agency that arranged them.

Questions people actually ask

Is search or paid advertising better for a plumbing company?
Both, for different jobs. Paid search buys immediate presence during emergency spikes when you cannot wait for rankings to move, and it can be switched off when your schedule is full. Organic visibility and the map listing compound and cost nothing per call, which matters most for planned work. A common sequence is paid coverage on emergency terms while the listing and organic layer are built underneath it.
How long before organic work produces calls?
Map and listing improvements can show within weeks when the previous state was inaccurate, because that work is remediation rather than competition. Competitive organic terms in a metro take months. Google's starter guide notes that some changes take effect in hours and others take months, and any provider quoting a fixed date for a fixed position is quoting something they do not control.
Should we publish prices on the website?
For planned work, a range with the variables explained converts better than nothing at all, because the buyer comparing three companies will otherwise pick the two that told them something. For emergency work, publishing a call out fee and being honest about after hours rates reduces the arguments that produce bad reviews. Whatever you publish must be accurate, since advertised prices are subject to the same truth in advertising rules as any other claim.
What should we own at the end of a contract?
The domain, the hosting, the website content, the analytics property, the Search Console access, the business listing and the call tracking numbers. Create each in your own name and grant the agency access rather than the reverse. The most expensive part of leaving a bad provider is rarely the notice period, it is discovering that the number on your vans belongs to someone else.
