Logo and branding services are two purchases, and confusing them is what makes the price arguments

A logo is a single design asset. Branding is the decision about what the business is for and to whom, expressed as a system: name, mark, colour, type, voice, photography and rules for using them. Those are different purchases with very different prices, and nearly every argument about what brand work should cost comes from a buyer pricing the first while a supplier quotes the second, or the reverse.

What a logo-only engagement should deliver

The mark in horizontal, stacked and icon-only forms; monochrome and reversed versions; vector source files you own; clear-space and minimum-size rules; and the fonts or their licences. That is a defined, affordable project. What it does not give you is a position, a voice or any guidance on how the brand behaves beyond the mark.

What full brand work adds

Research with customers and staff, a positioning decision that excludes something, naming if needed, a full visual and verbal system, application to your main touchpoints, and a guideline document somebody can actually use. The research is the part that makes it worth more than a logo, and it is the first thing cut when the budget is squeezed.

Clear the name and the mark before you commit

A trademark search before you fall in love with a name, and registration afterwards, is cheap relative to rebranding because someone else already holds the mark. Also check domain and handle availability early. Designers do not usually do this and it is not their job; make sure somebody is doing it before production begins.

Own the files, the fonts and the rights

Editable vector sources, the guideline document in an editable format, and written clarity on font licensing and any purchased imagery. Font licences in particular often cannot be transferred, and discovering that when you need a new asset in three years is a routine and avoidable annoyance.

Questions people ask about logo and branding services

Why do logo prices vary so enormously?

Because the deliverable does. A mark produced quickly from a template is a different purchase from one preceded by research and accompanied by a system. Neither is dishonest; specify which you are buying and compare like with like.

Should a small business buy full brand work?

Usually a well-executed logo plus a short set of rules on colour, type and voice is enough to look coherent, and that is affordable. Full brand work earns its cost when the position genuinely needs deciding or when many people will produce material.

Are design contests and marketplaces worth using?

They produce a mark cheaply and select for what looks good in isolation rather than for what fits a strategy, and rights and originality can be uncertain. If you use one, do the trademark check yourself and insist on full source files and a written assignment of rights.

How long should brand work take?

A logo project is usually weeks; full brand work with research is a couple of months or more. Longer engagements are generally a sign that research or stakeholder alignment is the real work, which is legitimate but should be visible in the plan.
