Top mobile app development companies: how to read a ranking of top app development companies in USA and choose an app development company that can still support you next year
A mobile app is the one build where two other companies get a vote. Apple and Google review what you publish, enforce policies that change without notice, and can remove an app that breaks them. That makes the choice of developer partly a choice of who will handle the store relationship for the years the app is live. This page covers what to look for in a mobile development firm beyond the portfolio screenshots, and what the running cost of an app actually consists of once the build is paid for.

Choosing a mobile development partner
- Ask who owns the store accounts. Apps are published under a developer account, and whoever holds it controls the listing. The account should be yours, with the firm added as a user. Buyers who let an agency publish under its own account find out how much that matters only when they want to change agency.
- Find out what happens when a store policy changes. Both stores update their rules regularly and enforce them on new submissions. Ask how the firm tracks policy changes and whether keeping the app compliant is inside a support contract or billed each time. This is a recurring cost that most quotes leave out entirely.
- Check the native versus cross platform reasoning. Cross platform frameworks let one codebase serve both stores and can halve the build cost. They also constrain what the app can do and add a dependency on the framework's own release cycle. Ask why the firm proposes what it proposes, in terms of your features rather than their preference.
- Price the first year, including releases. An app needs releases for operating system updates, device changes and store requirements even if you add no features. Ask for the expected number of releases in year one and what each costs. That number, not the build price, is what makes one quote cheaper than another over the life of the app.
Ranked lists are a source of candidates, not a verdict
Lists of top app development companies are compiled by directories with their own commercial models. Some rank by verified reviews, some by paid placement, some by a blend nobody publishes. The order tells you about the directory; the profiles tell you where to start.
What is worth extracting from any such list is the apps themselves. Download three from a firm's portfolio, use them, and read their recent store reviews. Ten minutes with a shipped app tells you more than a page of capability claims.
What the stores require, and who handles it
Both Apple and Google publish the rules an app has to meet: what data it may collect, how that collection must be disclosed, what counts as functional enough to publish, and how purchases must be handled. Rejections are common and usually fixable, but they take time and someone has to do the work.
Ask directly who writes the privacy disclosures, who responds to a rejection, and how quickly. A firm that has handled many submissions will answer with a process; one that has handled few will answer with reassurance.
The support arrangement is the real contract
An app is a living product with a support obligation. Crash reports have to be watched, operating system betas have to be tested against, and user reviews have to be answered. Decide whether that is yours, theirs, or shared, and get the answer priced.
The cheapest quote frequently belongs to the firm that has quoted a build and assumed you will look after the rest. That can be the right purchase, but only if you know you are making it.
Questions people actually ask
- How much does it cost to maintain an app after launch?
- It varies with complexity, but the components are predictable: store compliance work, operating system compatibility releases, crash fixing, third party service fees and any server side hosting. Ask each firm on your shortlist to quote a support retainer alongside the build and compare the two year total.
- Should I build for one platform first?
- Launching on one platform halves the build and the maintenance and gives you real usage before you commit to the second. It is usually the right choice unless your audience is genuinely split or the app's value depends on everyone having it.
- Who owns the app if we part ways?
- You should own the source code, the developer accounts and the listing, and it should say so in the contract. Confirm the account ownership question before the first submission, because moving a published app between accounts is far harder than starting in the right one.
