Web design agency services: what a responsive web design agency actually delivers, and which parts of web design agency services are usually quoted separately

Web design agency services are sold as a package and delivered as a sequence, and the difference is where buyers lose money. A design engagement produces artefacts: research, a structure, page layouts, a component set, and the specifications a developer needs. Which of those you receive, and in what form, decides whether the design can be built by anyone other than the agency that drew it. This page sets out the deliverables worth naming in a contract and the questions that reveal how a design agency actually works.

Commissioning a design engagement

  1. Ask for the deliverable list in the proposal. A design proposal should name what you receive: how many unique page layouts, at how many screen widths, with which states drawn, plus a component library and a specification a developer can build from. Without that list, agreeing that the design is finished becomes a matter of opinion.
  2. Confirm responsive means every width. Responsive design is not two layouts. Ask which widths will be designed and whether tables, forms, navigation and long content are drawn at the narrow width rather than left to the developer. The narrow width is where most designs quietly break, and it is where most of your traffic is.
  3. Name the accessibility level. Ask which conformance level the design targets and who checks it. Contrast, focus states, form labelling and heading order are design decisions before they are development decisions, and retrofitting them after a build is several times the cost.
  4. Decide who owns the files. Design source files, the component library and any licensed typefaces or photography should be named in the contract, with the licence terms for anything bought on your behalf. Buyers frequently discover after the fact that the typeface licence was the agency's and does not transfer.

Research, structure, surface

A full design engagement has three stages. Research establishes who the site is for and what they need to do. Structure decides what pages exist and how a visitor moves between them. Surface is the visual work most people picture when they say design.

Agencies that only sell surface are cheaper and suit a business whose structure already works. Where enquiries are being lost, the problem is almost always structure, and no amount of surface will fix it. Ask which stages a quote covers before comparing it with another.

Design that a developer can build

A design becomes buildable when it is expressed as a system rather than as pictures: a spacing scale, a type scale, a defined set of components and the states each of them has. Handing a developer a set of flat images produces a build full of judgement calls made by whoever is closest to the deadline.

Ask to see the component library from a previous project. It is the single most reliable indicator of whether a design agency's output survives contact with development.

Design and search are the same conversation

Page structure, heading hierarchy, internal links and how content is chunked are design decisions that determine what a search engine can understand. Google's own starter guide describes the structure of useful content rather than tricks, which is exactly the territory a designer works in.

An agency that treats search as a separate service to be added later is designing pages whose structure will have to be revisited. Asking how the proposed structure serves the searches you want to win is a fair design question, not a marketing one.

Questions people actually ask

What should a web design proposal include?
The stages covered, the number of unique layouts, the screen widths designed, the states drawn, whether a component library is delivered, who writes the content, the accessibility target and who owns the files. If any of those is missing, ask before comparing the price with anyone else's.
Is a separate design agency worth it if a developer offers design too?
Sometimes. A development firm with a real design practice can be excellent and removes the handover risk. A development firm where design means a themed template is a different product at a similar price. Ask to see work, not a service list.
How many rounds of revisions are normal?
Two or three on each deliverable is common, and the number matters less than what triggers a round. Agree that revisions respond to written feedback consolidated from your side. Most revision overruns come from feedback arriving piecemeal from people who were not in the earlier conversations.
