Business marketing companies are worth hiring once you know which gap you are filling

This is the search of somebody who knows they need marketing help and has not yet decided what kind, which makes it the moment where the most money is wasted. A generalist agency will sell a general engagement, and general engagements are the ones that produce a lot of activity and an unclear result. Twenty minutes spent identifying which specific thing is broken changes what you buy, what it costs and whether it works.

Name the gap before you take a meeting

There are only a few real ones: not enough people know you exist, they find you and do not enquire, they enquire and nobody follows up well, or they buy once and never return. Each has a different supplier. Walking into a pitch without having decided which one applies means the agency decides for you, and agencies reliably diagnose the problem they are best at solving.

Generalist or specialist is a real choice with real trade-offs

One supplier covering everything is simpler to manage and rarely excellent at any single discipline. Specialists are better at their thing and need somebody to coordinate them, which is your time. For a business under a certain size the coordination cost is the deciding factor, and for larger ones the quality difference usually is. Decide knowingly rather than defaulting to whoever pitched most convincingly.

Work out what a customer is worth first

Average order or contract value, how often they buy, how long they stay. Without those three numbers no one can say what you can afford to pay to acquire one, so every budget discussion is a negotiation about feelings. With them, most proposals answer themselves, and you will find that some channels a supplier is keen on cannot possibly work at your economics.

Marketing cannot fix a demand problem that is really an offer problem

If the price is wrong for the market, the product is undifferentiated, or nobody wants what you sell at the volume you need, more visibility makes the loss faster rather than smaller. A good agency will raise this and some will take the money instead. It is worth asking directly whether they think the offer is the constraint, and noting how comfortable they are answering.

Buy the first engagement small and specific

A defined piece of work with a deliverable and a date tells you how a supplier thinks, communicates and meets commitments, and leaves you with something either way. Open-ended retainers from month one are how businesses end up twelve months in with a folder of reports. Extend after evidence rather than before it.

Questions people ask about business marketing companies

Should we hire one agency for everything?

It depends on your size and your time. One supplier is simpler to manage and rarely excellent at any one discipline; specialists are better and need coordinating. Under a certain size the coordination cost decides it; above it, quality usually does.

What should we know before the first meeting?

Which of the four gaps you have, what a customer is worth, and what you can afford to pay to acquire one. Without those, the agency defines the problem, and agencies diagnose the problem they are best at solving.

How much should a small business spend on marketing?

Work from customer value and conversion rate rather than a percentage of revenue. A percentage rule cannot tell you whether a channel is affordable at your economics, and in many cases it simply is not.

What if marketing does not work?

Consider whether the constraint is the offer rather than the visibility. If the price, the product or the demand is wrong, more traffic accelerates the loss. Ask a prospective agency whether they think that is the case; the answer is informative either way.
