Digital advertising agencies differ most in which platforms they genuinely operate, not in method

Digital advertising is not one discipline. Buying search is a different job from buying social, which is different again from programmatic display, retail media networks and video. Most agencies are genuinely strong in one or two and adequate elsewhere, and nearly all of them list every platform on the website. Working out which two a firm actually operates every day is the main task in choosing one, and it is answerable with a few specific questions.

Ask for spend by platform, not a capability list

A firm that manages substantial monthly spend on a platform sees things that a firm running one small account does not. Ask roughly how much they manage on each platform you care about and how many accounts. The answer is not confidential in aggregate and it separates the two platforms they live in from the ones on the credentials slide.

Creative capacity decides social and video performance

On the social and video platforms the main performance lever is the creative, and the constraint is how many distinct concepts can be produced and tested each month. An agency with strong media skills and no production pipeline will plateau within a quarter. Ask how many new concepts are included, who makes them, and how they are retired.

Programmatic is where transparency questions belong

When a firm buys display or video programmatically, establish whether it is acting as your agent with disclosed costs or as a principal reselling inventory it bought. Ask what the platform fee is, whether you may audit media billing, and who pays for independent verification of viewability and brand safety. These are contract terms, not accusations.

One agency or several, and who integrates

Splitting platforms across specialists buys depth and creates a coordination job: shared audiences, consistent measurement, and somebody deciding where the marginal dollar goes. If nobody inside your business can do that, a single agency covering the two platforms that matter is usually the better arrangement even at some cost in depth.

Questions people ask about digital advertising agencies

How are digital advertising agencies paid?

Percentage of spend, flat retainer, or performance fees. Percentage rewards growing the budget, flat can underserve small accounts, performance turns on definitions. Ask for the same scope priced all three ways and compare what each costs at your expected spend.

Who should own the ad accounts?

You should, with the agency granted access. Conversion history, audience lists and account learning are genuinely difficult to rebuild, and this term is easy to agree at the start and nearly impossible to obtain once you have given notice.

How do we compare proposals fairly?

Reduce each to hours of named people per month, platforms actually operated, creative included, and who owns the landing pages. Two proposals at the same fee can differ several-fold in attention, and the difference is rarely visible in the summary page.

What should the first ninety days deliver?

Correct conversion tracking including offline outcomes where possible, account structure rebuilt around how people actually search or browse, geography and exclusions tightened, and a first round of creative tested. Rankings of platforms and strategy decks are not deliverables at this stage.
