A brand strategist agency is hired to make decisions, which is what separates it from a brand launch agency or a design studio

Brand strategy decides who you are for, what you stand for that competitors do not, and how that shows up in everything you make. It is a decision making exercise rather than a creative one, and its characteristic failure is a beautifully argued document that changes nothing because the people who had to act on it were not in the room.

What is actually being decided

The audience you are prepared to serve best and therefore whom you will serve less well, the position you can credibly own, the reasons to believe it, and the behaviours and language that follow. Each is a trade off. A strategy with no trade offs in it is a description of ambitions, which is why it changes nothing.

Strategy, launch and transformation are different jobs

Strategy decides. A launch executes a new proposition into market with a campaign and assets. A transformation changes how a business behaves internally so the position becomes true. Firms sell all three under similar names, and buying the first while needing the third is the most expensive version of this mistake.

Evidence beats workshops

Customer and lost prospect interviews, employee interviews, competitor analysis and the commercial data usually reveal a position that internal workshops cannot, because workshops surface what the room already believes. The single most valuable output is often a finding that the company is bought for a reason it never intended.

Make it survive the handover

Involve the people who will implement, require the strategist to stay through the first quarter of execution, and write the strategy so a marketer, a designer and a salesperson can each act on it. A strategy that only its author can apply has not finished being written.

Questions people ask about brand strategist agency

When does a company need brand strategy?

When growth has stalled without an obvious operational cause, when entering a new market, after a merger, or when nobody internally can state clearly who the product is for and why it wins.

Is strategy separable from design?

It can be bought separately and the risk is that it is never implemented. Either buy them together or require the strategist to review the first executions.

How long should it take?

Weeks for the research and decisions if access to customers is arranged promptly. Access is usually the constraint, and projects that skip it produce internal opinion dressed as strategy.

How is brand strategy judged?

By whether the decisions were made and acted on, then by whether the intended audience describes you the way the strategy intended. Both are observable and neither is a brand tracker on its own.
